What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). The core premise of EFT is that couples are emotionally attached to and dependent on each other for support, soothing, and protection. EFT aims to repair and strengthen this bond by finding and enhancing connection moments in the relationship.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling:

  • Emotional regulation of each partner
  • Emotional responsiveness skills
  • How to stop arguing when the “red brain” is activated.
  • How to work with partner trauma
  • Moving past injuries

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples / marriage counseling when they are able to recognize the “zones” they are in, and self-regulate from red to green. Then, they may also be able to help their partner regulate from red to green.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling with their own individual therapy. Couples counseling is often a signal source for individual blueprints formed in childhood, and it is necessary to heal and resolve those patterns in the safe space of individual therapy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can do what I call a “willingness check.” This is where you honestly examine your motivations and reasons for seeking couples counseling. Is it a real desire to invest in and learn about your relationship, or is it an unhealthy desire to prove your partner is wrong and bad? We do not leave the stable until we have clarified this very important door opener.
