Need more help deciding?

Depression and anxiety affect a large – and growing – number of Americans. Anxiety disorders alone are estimated to affect 40 million adults in America. These conditions are so common and their effects so great that it is estimated to cost the US economy $42 billion per year.

Depression and anxiety are complex mental health disorders that have a number of different triggers. One of the fundamental causes of these disorders are disruptions to the balance of chemicals in the brain. However, there is often an external reason for this imbalance in depression and anxiety, which means that the imbalance rarely occurs without a specific stimulus.

Both depression and anxiety often share similar root causes; abuse experienced during childhood or death of a loved one, for example. Excessive stress – in a variety of forms – is often the main culprit for anxiety disorders.

Signs And Symptoms

Distinguishing between normal emotions and feelings – such as sadness and worry – and depression and anxiety symptoms can be hard. Sadness, worry or concern are in many cases a normal response to traumatic and stressful events. The real distinguishing factor is when these normal emotions are experienced at very high intensities and over a prolonged period of time.

Some of the most common symptoms of depression and anxiety include:

Anxiety:

  • Lack of sleep.
  • Heart palpitations.
  • Constant worry.

Depression:

  • Intense emotions.
  • Unusually persistent emotions.

Treatment.

The initial treatment recommendations for depression and anxiety disorders often include lifestyle based interventions, as well as medication and therapy based methods. Lifestyle interventions such as improved nutrition and regular exercise can often help reduce the symptoms, but are not always completely effective. Medical interventions, on the other hand, can be very effective at reducing the symptoms, but may not be as valuable with regards to treating the root cause.

Meanwhile, therapy based methods such as counseling sessions can be very successful at treating depression and anxiety. An experienced counselor will guide you towards the root cause and will strive to treat you using one of the many established methods.

At Thriveworks Houston, TX our counselors specialize in the therapy based methods and work with our clients specifically to provide lasting relief to their problems. Get in touch with us now to arrange your first session.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
