What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I find the best benefit in CBT because it aims to help clients cope with many of life’s hurdles in real time. CBT is particularly well-known for offering clients coping strategies that work well outside of therapy.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Identify the problem
  • Set goals
  • Identify obstacles
  • Challenge automatic and intrusive thoughts
  • Identify and challenge core beliefs and assumptions
  • Enact lifestyle and behavioral changes
  • Employ problem-solving skills

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they are engaged, working towards goals, and can identify that they are making progress. Therapists can identify progress, but it is my belief that each client knows within themselves whether or not they are making progress.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with journaling, exercise, maintaining healthy eating and sleep habits, and working on the goals set forth in their treatment plan through homework or additional exercises.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can:

  • Be sure to be on time for your appointment.
  • Observe and take notes about your mental health every day.
  • Seek emergency help if your symptoms worsen significantly before your session.
  • Learn more about the style of therapy you're going to get.
  • Think about your goals for therapy and share them with your therapist.
  • Bring questions to ask your therapist.
  • Plan ahead of time for post-therapy reflection.
  • Consider other options if you're having a hard time getting in to see someone.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Grand Prairie, TX accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Types of Online Therapy and Counseling Offered at Thriveworks

In-person mental health services address many different types of mental health problems and online therapy or counseling can fill the same role for our clients. At Thriveworks, our trained psychologists, counselors, therapists, and psychiatric NPs can help you overcome the issues you’re facing.

You can access many different types of therapy and counseling remotely, including:

  • Family therapy and child therapy
  • Marriage counseling and couples therapy
  • Depression therapy
  • Anxiety therapy
  • LGBTQ+ counseling
  • Substance abuse counseling
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Grief and loss counseling
  • PTSD counseling and trauma therapy
  • Anger and stress management

Receiving these services can often be life-changing, which is why we offer them online. Online therapy provides benefits such as:

  • Increased accessibility: Online mental health services make therapy and counseling more accessible to a wider range of people. You can meet with online therapists and counselors without having a counseling center near your house — this lets people access professional counseling and therapy no matter where they live.
  • Increased reliability: Since you don’t have to drive to an office, you can meet with your counselor or therapist from nearly anywhere. That means bad weather, traffic, or a work trip won’t force you to cancel a session that you want to attend.
  • Added comfort: For some people, the idea of going to a strange place to talk about their thoughts and feelings is scary. Connecting with your counselor through video chats or phone calls means that your sessions can be held where you’re most comfortable, whether that be on your bed, at the dining room table, or even in your car.

Studies show that online therapy and counseling can be just as effective as traditional therapy, so you won’t be trading convenience for effectiveness when working with an online provider from Thriveworks Counseling in Grand Prairie, TX.

What To Expect: Online Counseling Sessions

You can work with a therapist or counselor through phone calls or video chats. But how does it work? It’s actually pretty simple.

For those speaking over the phone, your licensed counselor or therapist will call you at your scheduled session time. All you have to do is pick up your phone. For anyone meeting with their counselor via video chat, you’ll be sent a secure link by email. Clicking the link will take you to a video call where you and your counselor can speak face-to-face.

If you’re participating in group counseling, such as family therapy or relationship therapy, everyone will receive their own link to the session.

No matter how you meet your provider from Thriveworks Counseling in Grand Prairie, TX, you can expect to receive empathetic and effective treatment that addresses your unique needs.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
