Columbus, OH—Anxiety and Depression Counseling

Jack lost his lucrative position in sales about a year ago. While he has found work since, it has not been at the same income or prestige level as his previous position. He and his wife recently put their dream home on the market in order to downsize to something more affordable. He hasn’t slept well in months, easily becomes irritable, and feels tense almost all the time.

Jack is suffering from anxiety. He thinks he should feel lucky because he has been able to find work at all given the economy, but he doesn’t. He worries he will lose his job again, he feels a sense of failure, and some days he doesn’t even know why his wife is still with him. Jack would benefit from anxiety counseling. Anxiety counseling could help them to work through his feelings about everything that has occurred before they fester and become more serious. People often think anxiety and stress are the same thing and might credit Jack with stress only. However, stress and anxiety are different.

While stress can certainly be unpleasant, it is temporary and usually related to a specific event. For example, a student might be stressed about an upcoming deadline, or someone who receives a traffic ticket might experience stress during and after the event. It’s also common to experience stress related to financial matters, such as an unexpected bill. Anxiety, on the other hand, is longer lasting and not necessarily related to a specific event. The symptoms will be present to one degree or another at most times, including during times that should be relaxing. In addition, stressful events can lead to or exacerbate depression. In either case, it’s important you get the help that you need—and you can find that help at Thriveworks Columbus.

Anxiety and Depression Symptoms

Not everyone will experience the same symptoms, but some common ones include:

  • Difficulty concentrating and remembering details
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Sleep troubles
  • Restlessness
  • Tension
  • Worry

While anxiety typically presents with the above symptoms, depression may include the above symptoms as well as…

  • Loss of interest in previous hobbies
  • Loss of pleasure in life
  • Appetite changes
  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings
  • Suicidal ideation

How Can Counseling Help?

The good news is if you are experiencing anxiety or depression, Thriveworks Columbus counselors can help. Your anxiety or depression counselor will first get to know as much about you as possible. Next, they will talk with you about what you’ve been experiencing. Within a few sessions, you and your therapist will likely uncover the root cause of your anxiety or depression. When you know something is wrong, but you don’t know exactly what or why, it can add an additional sense of anxiety on top of whatever symptoms you were already experiencing. Once that root cause is uncovered, you may feel some immediate sense of relief.

The next step will be to work with your therapist to change your thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs surrounding the experience or situation that your anxiety or depression is stemming from. Thoughts create feelings and feelings create behaviors. By shifting thoughts and feelings to a more positive pattern, negative behaviors and feelings of depression or anxiety can be lifted. For example, Jack, in the example described at the beginning of this article, has feelings of insufficiency related to his job loss. An anxiety and depression counselor can work with Jack to determine what experiences are impacting his current situation, develop a plan to address those experiences, and create a more positive thought process that will help him overcome his anxiety.
