Online therapy FAQs

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Samantha has always loved the internet. She spent nights in middle school exploring obscure websites, learning how to code, and messaging her friends online. At 28, she’s a computer programmer and can travel almost anywhere while she works. So far, she’s visited Shanghai, Paris, and Berlin.

She also attends therapy for depression every week. Her sessions used to be at a counseling center in her hometown but going to in-person therapy meant delaying highly anticipated trips. When she voiced this concern to her psychologist, he suggested they try meeting over video chat.

Now Samantha accesses her appointments on the go while still enjoying the face-to-face nature of traditional therapy. Her mental health care, work obligations, and travel schedule don’t conflict with each other any longer.

If you’re interested in the added convenience and accessibility of virtual care, online counseling can help, just as it did for Samantha. You can gain a new understanding of your overall health, coping strategies for trauma or anxiety, and advice for personal growth.

At Thriveworks Counseling in College Station, TX, online therapists, counselors, psychiatrists, and psychologists are available to support you through your mental health struggles. Call our team or use our online booking tool to schedule your first session today.

The Types of Therapy and Counseling Accessible Online

Online therapy, life coaching, and counseling are incredibly similar to their in-person counterparts. Clients receive the same level of care, compassion, and dedication from a licensed therapist or counselor without needing to commute to an office.

Many types of therapy and counseling can be conducted online. At Thriveworks, a licensed mental health professional can offer:

  • Marriage counseling and couples therapy
  • Depression therapy and anxiety therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Family therapy and child therapy
  • LGBTQ+ therapy
  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD) therapy
  • Group therapy or counseling
  • PTSD counseling and trauma therapy
  • Anger and stress management
  • Life coaching and career counseling
  • Grief and loss counseling

People seek out a mental health professional for various reasons. A couple could need help dividing household responsibilities fairly, a family might be struggling to process a collective loss, and an individual may suspect they’re exhibiting symptoms of a serious mental health concern. Asking for help to address these kinds of situations is a sign of strength. It can also be the first step towards a healthier and more fulfilling future.

The Benefits of Attending Online Therapy or Counseling

Before we get into the advantages of online therapy or counseling, let’s talk about how it works. There are two ways to speak with an online provider at Thriveworks:

  • Phone calls: At the time of your appointment, your provider will call the number you provided. All you need to do is find a quiet location and pick up the phone.
  • Video chat: Shortly before your appointment, you’ll receive a link to a video chat room. When it’s time, follow the link to be admitted to a virtual space and start talking to your therapist or counselor.

Some prefer phone calls because they take the pressure off meeting a new person or appearing a certain way during therapy. Others like to use video chat to preserve the feeling of traditional therapy, where you work with a licensed counselor face-to-face. No matter what you choose, virtual sessions provide the same benefits as traditional, in-person sessions with added convenience.

Using either method, remote sessions have a number of benefits. First, there’s no need to travel to a session, saving on travel time and costs. In other cases, a single parent can access sessions without searching for a babysitter first, a teen with mobility issues can remain in the comfort of their own home, and an athlete who likes to walk as they talk can do so without being confined to an office building.

I feel like I am heard and understood even when I have a hard time expressing things myself and putting thoughts into words.
