What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is essentially recognizing your negative thoughts and replacing them with more positive or constructive opinions. The goal is to eventually think yourself out of depression. CBT requires a lot of commitment from the client, however, and sometimes people with chronic depression find it difficult to stick with this therapy. Sometimes CBT in conjunction with medication can be extremely helpful.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

In depression counseling, I tend to start with several steps to positive change which include:

  • Avoiding depressive thinking traps
  • Exercise
  • Eating healthy
  • Getting adequate rest and sleep
  • Using downtime constructively
  • Maintaining positive relations
  • Resolving conflict quickly
  • Getting fresh air and sunshine

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when the episodes of depressive thinking and behavior start to decrease.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients are expected to supplement their time in depression counseling by taking steps for positive change which we will identify in treatment so that it is individualized to them.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session is easy, just come-- that's the first step
