What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is motivational interviewing. I find this to be the best fit because it allows me to meet the client where they are and it can be tailored to many needs. It can be invasive or toned down. Additionally, while I have an eclectic style overall, motivational interviewing helps us create movement which typically leads to increased motivation and retention.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy: breathwork, tapping, compassionate self-talk, thought reframing, sleep hygiene, coping skills, grounding, and mindfulness to name a few.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they begin to speak about themselves differently. Perhaps they began treatment putting themselves down or making impulsive decisions and feeling hopeless. When this shifts, I know they are using the skills we have talked about.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with meditation, being outdoors, increasing connection with others, podcasts or books, and practicing coping and grounding skills.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can make sure you have the meeting link and platform downloaded. You can also write down why you are seeking therapy, any goals you may have, what you are and are not looking for in a therapist, and any questions you may have.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Chesapeake, VA accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

…so many people live in shame, hiding their struggles, not seeking help.

We, as a culture, have not fully acknowledged how much help is needed.

The only real shame is on us for not being willing to speak openly. For

continuing to deny that mental health is related to our overall health.

We need to start talking, and we need to start now.”

–Oprah Winfrey

That’s right, Thriveworks Chesapeake, VA now offers online counseling services. If you’re interested in online counseling, all you have to do is call (757) 414-6427 to schedule your appointment. What Is Distance Therapy? How Does Online Counseling Work?

Distance therapy refers to counseling that is conducted online versus in-person. If you decide to go the online counseling route, you’ll get to work with your therapist in one of two ways: over the phone or via video chat. If you choose the former, your counselor will give you a call at the scheduled time—make sure you have service! And if choose the latter of the two options, you’ll be sent a video link; click on this link and join the chat at the scheduled time. You’ll meet with your therapist here.

You might be wondering why people forego in-person counseling and choose to work with their therapist online instead. There are actually a few good reasons why people choose online therapy over in-person counseling. These include:

  1. It’s more convenient for their schedule: Many people don’t have enough time to take off of work for all of their appointments. And the last thing they want to do after work is drive to another office! Fortunately, online counseling allows them to receive the mental health help they need with the utmost convenience. Instead of having to drive to a therapy office, online counseling enables you to attend from the convenience of home.
  2. It might be easier for you to talk about tough subjects: A huge challenge for many people who could benefit from mental health services is reaching out for that help and then opening up in therapy. In many cases, people find that opening up to a therapist or counselor is more easily done in online counseling, when they meet with their provider through virtual means.
  3. It’s an effective option that enables you to make meaningful advancements: Choosing online counseling does not mean sacrificing or slowing down the progress you would make in in-person or face-to-face counseling. If you’re ready to make meaningful advancements with a counselor, reach out to Thriveworks Chesapeake, VA today.

You can begin making progress with your therapist at Thriveworks Chesapeake, as soon as today. To get started, you simply need to schedule your appointment. We’re here to help when you’re ready to get started.

Work with an Online Counselor at Thriveworks Chesapeake, VA

Online counseling is a convenient, comfortable, and effective counseling option. In addition, it offers a factor of reliability. When it comes to in-person counseling, there are many external factors that might get in your way of attending your session. For example, you might be forced to cancel or reschedule your appointment because you’re stuck in traffic, you’ve come down with an illness, or there are bad weather conditions. The same cannot be said for online counseling. With online counseling, you can count on making your appointment on time, as long as you have phone service or internet connection.

If online counseling sounds like the right therapy option for you or an option that’s worth exploring, reach out to Thriveworks Chesapeake. Give our team a call at (757) 414-6427 and we’ll help you schedule a phone counseling session or videoconference with an online counselor.

I would like to sing the praises of Andrea Stephen and give her a big shout-out for a job well done!!! I have had the pleasure of studying with her in multiple classes, as a fellow student in the counseling program. Later on, we serendipitously worked alongside each other in the field. Andrea is a genuine listener, faithful encourager, and a beacon of hope. She is a counselor who truly cares about her clients and wants to see them thrive.

I've had the pleasure of working with Tammy Boone for about 5 months now and it has been a wonderful journey. She has challenged me to do the work and express myself in ways I never thought was possible. She provides ways to cope with difficult situations without being judgmental. I couldn't have asked for a better clinician!
