What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My primary approach for couples and marriage counseling is cognitive behavioral couples therapy (CBCT). I prefer this approach because I find it to be a straightforward way of helping couples improve their communication, trust, and conflict resolution skills which tend to lead to more satisfying relationships.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

Some of the tools I teach in couples and marriage counseling are:

  • Effective communication: This involves learning how to listen to understand and not listen to reply. This often includes learning how to use “I” statements and reflective listening that creates opportunities for better understanding and validation from each other.
  • Conflict resolution: Couples learn steps to address conflict in healthy ways that increase trust and connection. This helps couples to get out of a pattern of avoiding issues that often result in increased resentment and frustration.
  • Creating healthy relationship rituals: Rituals are a special time for you and your partner to connect, share affection, and be fully present. Couples learn ways to create consistent, intentional time to have fun and connect.
  • Creating realistic expectations: When couples come into therapy, they often have unfair expectations for each other that create more dissatisfaction and conflict. Couples learn to address and navigate expectations in appropriate ways that result in understanding and appreciation for each other.
  • Emotion regulation: Couples learn tools to manage their emotions effectively that enable them to connect safely with each other.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples and marriage counseling when I see improved communication, conflict resolution, and understanding of one another. This often includes decreased defensiveness and criticism and increased accountability.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

I encourage my couples to spend intentional time using the skills they are learning in counseling. This may include date nights, weekly check-ins, or reading books that deepen their understanding of one another.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples counseling session, I recommend that the couple have a discussion about what they want to address and accomplish in the counseling process.

Do I Need Relationship Counseling?

Deciding to talk with a provider in couples therapy or marriage counseling is an independent decision that you’ll need to make between you and your partner. However, there are common indications of unhealthy relationship dynamics that can be improved via therapy, including:

  • Arguments that last for days or weeks
  • Passive-aggressive communication methods
  • Inability to respect each other’s boundaries
