What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is person-centered as it provides empowerment, identification and processing of feelings, while the client is more in charge rather than the clinician.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I teach clients tools that they may need help with such as regulating their emotions in the midst of anxiety or extreme anger, I implement a lot of psychoeducation in using your senses and grounding techniques to de-escalate the levels of emotions. I additionally help with any recommendations for night time sleep if they are struggling at night such as implementing a bed time routine and doing things before getting into bed to get more into a sleeping zone.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

I know a client is making progress when they report the changes themselves or if I am continuously following up to see if they are implementing the technique/tool and they are reporting less anxiety attacks for example.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

I always encourage clients to implement a lot of self-care aside from individual therapy. Self-care gives each individual that additional attention, thought, and intention to give themselves something whether it is your favorite drink, a bubble bath, a walk outside, etc. Sometimes we are so giving to others or we are so focused on so many other things we forget to give ourselves additional things aside from basic needs.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

To prepare for the first individual therapy session, come without expectations, but also ask questions if there are any. Many therapists practice in a different style/modality so just a small reminder to be open and to not expect immediate solutions or a fix-it style in just one appointment. Therapy takes some time and it is a process/journey for sure!

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
