What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in dialectical behavior therapy is to start out by teaching coping skills. I prefer starting with this as I feel it helps the client regulate their emotions better before diving into more specific concerns.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

I teach the following tools in dialectical behavior therapy:

  • Mindfulness: teaching individuals how to live in the moment and why this is important
  • Emotional regulation skills: being dysregulated makes it difficult to do almost anything else
  • Distress tolerance skills: skills that allow you to step away from a situation so that when you come back to it, you are in a better headspace

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy when they are able to better manage life stressors thrown at them.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in dialectical behavior therapy by practicing/reviewing their skills before they are too escalated and reflecting on things that they find triggering.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

To prepare for their first dialectical behavior therapy session, an individual can take a deep breath and come into the session with an open mind ready to learn and try some new skills!

Starting Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

What is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)?

At Thriveworks, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) primarily concentrates on assisting individuals in emotion regulation, enhancing interpersonal relationships, and acquiring effective coping strategies for managing stress and emotional difficulties.

How does DBT work?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets your personal challenges. You may work with your DBT therapist to maintain diary cards to monitor progress, emphasizing validation and support in the therapeutic relationship. DBT follows a stage-based approach, prioritizing crisis reduction initially and life satisfaction.

What is DBT best used for?

DBT was initially developed to address the needs of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, its versatile approach has enabled its application to a wide range of mental health conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety, depression, stress, and anger issues.

What are the 4 pillars of DBT?

The 4 pillars of DBT are mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

Is DBT better than EMDR?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have distinct purposes and aren’t inherently superior or inferior to one another. DBT is most effective for managing emotional regulation, personality disorders, and interpersonal challenges, while EMDR is specifically tailored for individuals with trauma-related conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Is DBT conducted in person or online?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) with therapists at Thriveworks in North Charleston, SC is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many months is DBT?

The duration of a standard DBT program is typically around 24 weeks, which is roughly six months. The actual number of sessions will vary depending on the issues you wish to address.

I have been seeing a therapist via Thriveworks every other week for several months and I couldn't be happier. The intake form was easy to fill out and somehow managed to put me with someone who works perfectly with me. She works at my pace, she understands and works towards our goals, and she helps me to see things more clearly as we process the issues at hand. She never 'tells me' what the issue is or how to solve but instead she leads me there so I can see it on my own as that is much more effective. I was very nervous about online therapy but after this experience with Kristen, I would recommend it to everyone, regardless of the severity of their issues. Kristen is a true professional and can ebb and flow as I am ready to process things. She has been a game changer for me, my family, and my colleagues.

I am a survivor of childhood trauma. I've struggled with depression most of my life. Emily Frichtl has helped me in so many ways. I felt safe with her and over time I learned to trust her, which was hard for me. I still have a lot of work to do in learning to live with the things I've been through but I wouldn't be in a more accepting head space without the work we've done. I highly recommend her.

I have worked with Jennifer Brown for a number of years and have found her to be caring, compassionate, and conscientious. She has an empathetic personality and truly cares for her clients and wants what is best for them. One of her greatest skills is her ability to ask "the right question" to help you find YOUR correct answer. Her support during the time my Mom was passing helped me get through a very difficult time. No hesitancy in recommending.
