What tools do you teach in family therapy?

Manuel Lima
Manuel Lima

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

The tools I teach in family therapy include:
  • Cognitive defusion from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), enhancing thought flexibility.
  • DeCatastrophizing, a cognitive restructuring technique to reduce catastrophic thinking.
  • The self-care wheel, covering physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, personal, and professional wellbeing.
  • DEAR MAN from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for effective communication.
  • SMART goals for clear, achievable goal-setting.
  • Anchor memories for establishing desired response triggers.
  • Evidenced-based thought challenging to assess the realism of thoughts.
  • Positive thinking thought challenging to replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
  • Cognitive restructuring thought challenging from CBT to adjust unhelpful beliefs.
  • Mindfulness practices from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) for present moment awareness.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

Alexander Arici
Alexander Arici

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

Grief's journey is unique for everyone, so my toolbox overflows with diverse tools to empower you. Here are a few highlights:
  • Harnessing connection: You're never alone in grief. I aim to help you tap into the supportive arms of your community and loved ones, fostering a safety net of understanding and shared experience.
  • Mindful self-care: Just like tending a garden, self-care nourishes your emotional well-being. We explore mindfulness practices, from calming breaths to soothing rituals, that nurture your spirit during challenging times.
  • Embracing acceptance: Radical acceptance doesn't mean condoning the loss, but acknowledging its reality with compassion. We explore techniques to soften resistance and create space within our lives for healing.
  • Managing distress: Grief often brings waves of difficult emotions. I aim to equip you with distress tolerance tools, like grounding techniques and healthy coping mechanisms, to navigate these waves with greater ease.
  • Shifting perspectives: Sometimes, changing how we view our experiences can shift our emotional responses or heal us in ways that can empower us for the tough battles ahead. We explore different lenses to understand your grief, empowering you to choose mindful reactions to your feelings.
Remember, these are just a glimpse into the tools I offer. Together, we'll tailor a unique set to guide you through your grief journey, step by compassionate step.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

Alexander Arici
Alexander Arici

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

To prepare for your first DBT session, take a deep breath and know therapy is a safe space to explore your challenges. There's no pressure to have all the answers. Coming with an open mind and willingness to participate are key. If it helps, jot down some thoughts or situations where you feel you could benefit from DBT skills. Maybe it's managing intense emotions or navigating difficult relationships. Sharing these things can help us get started and make the most of our first session together.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
