Starting Depression counseling

What can counseling do for those who suffer with depression?

Depression counseling can help those with major depression, minor depression, postpartum depression, persistent depressive disorder, and more. The providers at Thriveworks in Georgetown, TX will develop a unique treatment plan based on your specific experience, needs, and goals.

Is it worth going to therapy for depression?

It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.

How does depression counseling work?

Depression counseling works by helping people pinpoint life problems, distorted thought patterns, and other causes of their depression, then process and work through them in order to mitigate the negative effects those factors have on their lives.

Signs of depression

Common signs of depression include:

  • Consistent low mood
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Oversleeping or difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in diet (eating much more or less)
  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in previous hobbies or activities
  • Excessive substance use

Is depression counseling conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks depression counseling in Georgetown, TX is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How often should you have therapy for depression?

Depression counseling can last for a few weeks, months, or longer, dependent on the severity of one’s depression as well as their needs and preferences.

How much does depression counseling cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay a $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

Danae started off the New Year with a slew of resolutions. She’d planned on learning to ski, exercising three times a week, and getting back into the dating scene. But so far, she’s struggled to even motivate herself to get out of bed. Every fall and winter, it’s like a cloud is hanging over her. Life seems gray, dull, and dreary—even time spent with her family and friends makes her feel numb.

Danae wonders if she’s suffering from depression, maybe even seasonal affective disorder. But she knows that she can’t diagnose herself; that’s why she’s thinking that maybe this is the year that she finally talks to a mental health professional. With a counselor or therapist’s help, she hopes that she can come to terms with the residual sadness, despair, and hopelessness that she’s struggling to cope with daily. Danae’s new resolution, the one that matters to her most, is addressing her mental health needs.

Like Danae, you may also be hoping to confide in a mental health professional about your own depressive symptoms. And at Thriveworks in Georgetown, TX we have providers who can help. We offer comprehensive, personalized treatment to help you get back on the path to success. Learn more about how our therapists and counselors can assist you in managing the difficult symptoms of depression.

Am I Depressed? What Are the Symptoms of Depression?

Like all mental health conditions, depression can be triggered by a variety of unique conditions or factors in a person’s life. Therefore, before assuming that you are depressed, it’s better to talk with a mental health professional to receive an accurate diagnosis. In the meantime, getting an accurate assessment of what you’re feeling can help you determine if you’re at least experiencing the symptoms of depression. These can include:

  • Distancing yourself from loved ones and friends
  • A noted lack of interest in sex, hobbies, or relationships
  • Overeating or avoiding eating to cope with stress or sadness
  • Decreased work performance
  • Lack of self-care (i.e. personal hygiene or a clean living environment)
  • Abuse of drugs or alcohol to cope with your emotional pain
  • Feeling chronically fatigued

These are just a few of the many ways that the symptoms of depression could affect you. Thankfully, at Thriveworks in Georgetown, TX we help everyday people manage and mitigate the symptoms of some of the most common forms of depression, including:

  • Postpartum depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Major depressive disorder
  • Minor depression
  • Seasonal affective disorder

Who Should I Talk to About My Depression?

When it comes to treating your depressive symptoms, you have several options. Our psychiatrists, counselors, and therapists can help you to find relief from depression, but their methods differ. For more severe or persistent cases of depression, a psychiatrist is often the go-to choice for more severe or persistent cases of depression, because they’re:

  • Able to prescribe helpful medication to people in order to assist them in managing the disruptive effects of mental health disorders like depression.
  • Able to use a combinative approach with prescriptions and a form of talk/behavioral therapy to assist those who see them.
  • Medical doctors in addition to being licensed to conduct therapy sessions.

But for more moderate cases of depression that are more easily managed without medication, a therapist or counselor can help by:

  • Treating mental health disorders and conditions using different forms of therapy, which often includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectal behavioral therapy (DBT)
  • Using sessions as a medium for progress. These sessions rely on a candid, professional relationship between themselves and the client.
  • Using your personal experiences and needs to create custom treatment plans that include coping strategies and the formation of healthy boundaries.

Trust in the providers at Thriveworks in Georgetown, TX for assistance in treating your depressive symptoms. With expert care and support from a team of experienced professionals, you can start to reclaim your quality of life, session by session.

I thought our marriage was over. I only gave him one option (counseling) or I was leaving. I wanted him to do it because he realized he had to make some changes in his thinking and his life...for his own happiness. The first counselor he tolerated for 1 session. I told him to do his own homework and he found Ashley on his own. The fact that my husband has been in her counseling for close to 2 years is truly amazing. This was one man who I totally expected to do 3-4 sessions and then decide it wasn't for him and then I would just consider divorce because our life was intolerable for me. He has learned things about himself that now make him very thoughtful about things and about what matters in his life and in our life. I am so appreciative for Ashley.

Absolutely love everything about Lindsey. She is amazing with my son (age 6). It has helped him so so so much and helped me parent the way he needs. I am so glad we were able to start seeing her and continue seeing her. He loves going to therapy and since we started his behavior has become so much better. Being a single mom of two, I'm glad he get specific attention from someone who cares. Thank you! I would give 10 stars if I could.

I have always thought counseling wasn't for me; however, after being paired with Linda Mekesic, I was proven wrong. I was able to open up and learn from the grief that I didn't realize I was holding on to. It was a blessing and Linda and Thriveworks is a hidden blessing that I am glad I stumbled across.

I was never open to counseling but moving to Texas and having special people enter into my life, well I became open to it but knew I needed a special person and that is when Linda Mikesic came into my life. I thought I was there for letting my son move on and found out that I held onto a lot of grief of losing my husband and Linda had a special way of making me feel safe and that it was ok to feel again. I am so thankful and grateful that she helped me and I continue to use the tools that she taught me.

Linda Mikesic is a fantastic therapist and person. She has a compassion and love for others that can’t be taught. Being a mental health care provider, I am always looking for therapists to refer patients to. Therapists I can count on to treat my patients with love and respect. I've known Linda and collaborated with her for 3 years and fits that definition every time. I know when I refer my patients to Linda, that they will get individualized compassionate person-centered care.
