Starting Couples therapy

What is Couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Need more help deciding?

The newspaper advice columnist Ann Landers once stated, “Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses.” Ann Landers was not a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), but she certainly heard her share of relationship troubles, so she had some valuable insights into interpersonal issues. But friendship can “catch fire” in a way that warms two people like a fireplace in winter, or it can catch fire with a passion that burns and causes pain. In those cases, couples can benefit from talking to a professional who knows how to help manage the flames.

The licensed couples therapists and marriage counselors at Thriveworks in Georgetown, TX have many years of experience working with couples who are motivated to work through their issues and obstacles. They treat each couple with compassion, understanding, and expertise. These LMFTs are not there to judge significant others, but rather to meet them where they are and help them achieve their goals.

What Is a Marriage and Family Therapist?

A licensed marriage and family therapist is a social worker, therapist, or licensed professional counselor (LPC) who works with couples and/or family members to solve their problems and strengthen their relationships. They are facilitators and mediators. They are both accepting and challenging. They are arbiters and listeners. During insightful therapy sessions at Thriveworks in Georgetown, TX, these abundantly-qualified counselors ask meaningful questions and use evidence-based practices to tease out and resolve underlying issues.

Does Couples Counseling Really Work?

Couples counseling at Thriveworks in Georgetown, TX is highly successful at helping couples achieve their therapy objectives. These goals can be wide-ranging, depending on the partners seeking counseling, but some common goals include the following:

  • To establish better boundaries
  • To manage anger and other negative emotions
  • To improve rapport and mutual understanding
  • To improve intimacy
  • To reduce conflict and tension
  • To stop having the same argument
  • To confront alcohol abuse or addiction
  • To heal after infidelity
  • To manage life transitions
  • To cope with empty nest syndrome or midlife crises
  • To talk through infertility or parenting issues
  • To identify mental health concerns that affect the relationship
  • To work through trauma
  • To grieve and cope with loss together

What Type of Issues Can Relationship Counseling Help Solve?

Couples therapy and marriage counseling at Thriveworks in Georgetown, TX is for recognizing and enhancing strengths that already exist in the relationship as well as solving a wide range of problems. LMFTs can accomplish this problem-solving enterprise by helping couples examine the following:

  • How their individual values overlap or differ
  • Underlying beliefs and expectations
  • Financial goals
  • Communication styles
  • Coping strategies and skills
  • Family backgrounds
  • Sexual intimacy
  • Household management

No conflict is too big or too small for a couple to explore in marriage counseling. After all, a perpetual argument over who does the dishes can signify a deeper divide in a marriage. Qualified couple therapists at Thriveworks can help identify both problems and solutions.

What Is the Best Marital Therapy?

Every marriage counselor and couples therapist at Thriveworks in Georgetown, TX has a different approach, but they all might draw from the following effective modalities in treating clients:

  • Emotionally focused therapy (EFT)
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Trauma focused CBT (TFCBT)
  • Person-centered therapy
  • Strength-based therapy
  • Solution-focused therapy
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Gottman method (pioneered by John Gottman)
  • Substance abuse or addiction counseling
  • Family therapy
  • Depression counseling
  • Anxiety therapy
  • Mindfulness approaches
  • Narrative therapy
  • Collaborative couples therapies

These therapeutic approaches might involve talking and an exchange of feelings and ideas, and they may involve games and exercises. They might even involve homework! When couples choose a marriage counselor, they can research the counselor’s style and general approach to make sure they’re a good match. For example, a Christian couple might choose a counselor who specializes in Christian marriage counseling, and an LGBTQ+ couple might choose a counselor who specializes in specific issues that might arise in marriages between people of the same sex.

I thought our marriage was over. I only gave him one option (counseling) or I was leaving. I wanted him to do it because he realized he had to make some changes in his thinking and his life...for his own happiness. The first counselor he tolerated for 1 session. I told him to do his own homework and he found Ashley on his own. The fact that my husband has been in her counseling for close to 2 years is truly amazing. This was one man who I totally expected to do 3-4 sessions and then decide it wasn't for him and then I would just consider divorce because our life was intolerable for me. He has learned things about himself that now make him very thoughtful about things and about what matters in his life and in our life. I am so appreciative for Ashley.

Absolutely love everything about Lindsey. She is amazing with my son (age 6). It has helped him so so so much and helped me parent the way he needs. I am so glad we were able to start seeing her and continue seeing her. He loves going to therapy and since we started his behavior has become so much better. Being a single mom of two, I'm glad he get specific attention from someone who cares. Thank you! I would give 10 stars if I could.

When my husband and I went to see Linda we were falling apart. She provided the tools we needed to pick up the pieces and heal our marriage. She is very knowledgeable, kind, compassionate, and tough when she needs to be. She is a blessing from God to us and I would highly recommend her.

I have always thought counseling wasn't for me; however, after being paired with Linda Mekesic, I was proven wrong. I was able to open up and learn from the grief that I didn't realize I was holding on to. It was a blessing and Linda and Thriveworks is a hidden blessing that I am glad I stumbled across.

I was never open to counseling but moving to Texas and having special people enter into my life, well I became open to it but knew I needed a special person and that is when Linda Mikesic came into my life. I thought I was there for letting my son move on and found out that I held onto a lot of grief of losing my husband and Linda had a special way of making me feel safe and that it was ok to feel again. I am so thankful and grateful that she helped me and I continue to use the tools that she taught me.

Linda Mikesic is a fantastic therapist and person. She has a compassion and love for others that can’t be taught. Being a mental health care provider, I am always looking for therapists to refer patients to. Therapists I can count on to treat my patients with love and respect. I've known Linda and collaborated with her for 3 years and fits that definition every time. I know when I refer my patients to Linda, that they will get individualized compassionate person-centered care.
