What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

As an LCSW, my go-to approach for helping people in therapy is meeting them where they actually are, not where I think they should be. I work from the humanistic theory and utilize an integrative approach to fit the client's needs. These include mindfulness-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (MBCT), schema, strength-based therapy, Adlerian therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, psychodynamic therapy, existential therapy, narrative therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), expressive art as therapy, positive psychotherapy, coaching, internal family systems (IFS) therapy, motivational interviewing (MI), rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), solution-focused therapy, and interpersonal therapy.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I teach the following tools in therapy: developing self-awareness and self-compassion, setting attainable goals for behavioral change, challenging negative thoughts/self-talk, exploring healthy coping strategies that work for the individual, and growing beyond the client's comfortable but unhelpful patterns.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they demonstrate a deeper understanding of their thoughts, behaviors, and feelings and they start incorporating the learned skills without being prompted.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by tending to the pillars of mental health: physical needs (sleep, nutrition, exercise), mental and spiritual self-care, and fostering social supports. I also encourage mindfulness, meditation, and journaling.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To prepare for your first therapy session, you can come up with a sentence or two that summarizes what you are looking for in treatment. Be prepared to answer a bunch of questions as I learn about you and gather background info for the intake assessment. I ask that clients commit to at least three months of weekly or bi-weekly sessions. Other than that, strap yourself in, be open-minded and willing to do the work, and trust the therapeutic process!

Starting Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in Henrico

What is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?

At Thriveworks, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized and evidence-based form of psychotherapy or talk therapy. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors that can contribute to various mental health issues or challenges that people are struggling with.

What does a cognitive behavioral therapist do?

Cognitive behavioral therapists specialize in Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and can help you to identify and comprehend your thought patterns, which often encompass automatic negative thoughts, cognitive distortions, and self-defeating beliefs. Once these negative thought patterns are pinpointed, cognitive behavioral therapists aim to challenge and replace them with the objective of fostering more constructive and logical thinking. In addition, these therapists place significant emphasis on implementing positive behavioral changes based on the newly established, healthier thought patterns.

What is CBT best for?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for addressing conditions like anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. It focuses on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviors, making it well-suited for issues related to distorted thinking and emotional regulation.

How much does a CBT session cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

What is the success rate of CBT?

The success rate of CBT varies depending on the intentions of the client and their condition(s).

What is better: CBT or DBT?

The selection between cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is based on an individual’s unique needs and challenges. CBT is commonly chosen for addressing conditions such as anxiety and depression, whereas DBT is especially beneficial for individuals dealing with borderline personality disorder, emotional regulation issues, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.

Is CBT conducted in person or online?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with our Thriveworks therapists in Henrico, VA is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many sessions is CBT?

Generally, CBT is considered a short-term therapy, typically lasting for about 12 to 20 weekly sessions. In some cases, it might extend to around 16 to 20 sessions for more complex issues.

I just love my therapist, Latoya. Our session begins with a calming, meditative exercise which is perfect. Latoya's demeanor is professional, supportive and empathetic. She listens intently, asks pertinent questions, validates responses and provides positive, impactful comments with additional open-ended questions to spark ideas for moving forward. I come away from the sessions emotionally exhausted because the issues can be heavy, but I am also energized to move forward taking charge of my life, examining feelings and emotions in healthy ways, realizing 'I am enough', and filling my cup full to overflowing in order to inspire those around me. My sessions with Latoya every other week are a win/win, and I will be continuing them for some time because the benefits are immeasurable. Thank you for being here for me!

Ashley was fantastic. I appreciated that she actively listened, asked engaging and relevant questions, was relatable, and just overall gave me a great impression of therapy after my first session. I know therapy has helped so many people but I just didn't want to take that first step and when I finally did, it was absolutely worth it. I obviously don't feel 'cured' but this first session really gave me hope that I am going to be okay and things are going to workout. I felt like I was on the come down for the first time in a long time and was able to relax just a little bit afterwards. I liked how it was a mix of all of the emotions coming out too, laughing, crying, and normal conversation. I really look forward to working with her.

Ashley made me feel comfortable, she stressed that I need to speak my truth and be myself no matter how that may affect others. With time and self reflection I will be able to track my progress and see myself change in real time. I really enjoyed it.
