Starting Career counseling in Henrico

What is career counseling?

Career counseling, sometimes called career coaching, helps individuals make informed career decisions. This type of counseling is led by one of our Henrico therapists who is trained to provide career development support.

How does career counseling work?

Career counseling works to help you navigate your professional career and offer valuable information, such as required skill sets and/or education, regarding a particular position you may be considering. The following are common focuses of conversation that will help your career counselor best help you:

  • Job environment preferences
  • Growth potential
  • Career goals, short- and long-term
  • Personality type
  • Desired lifestyle
  • Potential earnings of a given career

Is career counseling conducted in person or online?

Career counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does career counseling last?

Career counseling can last for weeks, months, or even years. It all depends on the goals that you’re looking to accomplish and whether you continue to want/need a counselor to help you reach your goals. Either way, our career counselors are here and ready to help you get on the right track.

Need more help deciding?

Career Counseling in Short Pump (Henrico, VA)

When a job situation is dragging you or someone you care about down, eventually it filters into all aspects of that unhappy worker’s life. Oftentimes that leads to deleterious effects that impact a person’s health, well-being and damages their relationships.

If you’re looking to benefit from career counseling, reach out to Thriveworks at Short Pump to get started.

Signs that You Need a Career Change

As you go into a stressful work environment day-after-day, it begins to take a physical and mental toll. Here are some of the clinical signs that indicate you need to change your career:

  • General unhappiness, especially at work
  • Feel depressed and/or anxious a lot
  • Lack of motivation
  • Can’t seem to focus on tasks, even simpler ones
  • Frequently complain to others at work, or outside of the job setting
  • Have a difficult time sleeping and may even suffer from insomnia
  • Feel like your potential is underused and under appreciated
  • Self-medicate with drugs and other substances

If you or someone you love currently exhibits one or more of these symptoms because of their job, a career change is advisable before the spillover effects get worse.

Career Counseling Involves these Rewarding Steps

Career counselors or coaches can walk you through the self-assessment and career development process step-by-step. Some of the ways they do that include:

  • Determine why you are unhappy in your current job situation
  • Help you identify and explore your skills and strengths
  • Discuss your education and future educational and training objectives
  • Identify your interests, passion and personality type
  • Ascertain your aptitude using IQ and other similar testing
  • Find out what your career and earnings goals are
  • Determine what your at-home situation is currently like and future jobs it would support
  • Are you receptive to moving for a job opportunity?
  • Discuss your desired work environment. Is it in an office, at-home, fast-paced, etc.?

Using these methods while under the direction of a trained career coach can go a long way in helping a person find out who they truly are, what their job skills might be, and how that package best fits into an employment setting.

I just love my therapist, Latoya. Our session begins with a calming, meditative exercise which is perfect. Latoya's demeanor is professional, supportive and empathetic. She listens intently, asks pertinent questions, validates responses and provides positive, impactful comments with additional open-ended questions to spark ideas for moving forward. I come away from the sessions emotionally exhausted because the issues can be heavy, but I am also energized to move forward taking charge of my life, examining feelings and emotions in healthy ways, realizing 'I am enough', and filling my cup full to overflowing in order to inspire those around me. My sessions with Latoya every other week are a win/win, and I will be continuing them for some time because the benefits are immeasurable. Thank you for being here for me!

Ashley was fantastic. I appreciated that she actively listened, asked engaging and relevant questions, was relatable, and just overall gave me a great impression of therapy after my first session. I know therapy has helped so many people but I just didn't want to take that first step and when I finally did, it was absolutely worth it. I obviously don't feel 'cured' but this first session really gave me hope that I am going to be okay and things are going to workout. I felt like I was on the come down for the first time in a long time and was able to relax just a little bit afterwards. I liked how it was a mix of all of the emotions coming out too, laughing, crying, and normal conversation. I really look forward to working with her.

Ashley made me feel comfortable, she stressed that I need to speak my truth and be myself no matter how that may affect others. With time and self reflection I will be able to track my progress and see myself change in real time. I really enjoyed it.
