What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to identify the goal the client would like to achieve. I prefer to use cognitive behavioral therapy because thoughts lead to emotions, and when a person is able to reframe his/her thoughts, it leads to a better emotional outcome.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Reflective listening: A technique that requires one to put aside their own thoughts and feelings and truly listen to the other.
  • Trauma-informed care: Understanding how earlier experiences are currently impacting the client's daily life.
  • Assertive communication skills: Teaches the client how to ask and receive what they desire in a non-confrontational manner.
  • Psycho-educational skills: Allow a client to have a deeper insight into their life experience.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when he/she reports that daily living has improved and he/she is closer to achieving said goals.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by practicing the tools and strategies provided in sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for the first online therapy session, a client can clearly identify what their goal for therapy is. I like to ask clients: If therapy were to be successful, how would life be different?

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

How Does Online Counseling Work?

As mentioned before, online counseling, also known as teletherapy, allows you to work with your therapist from whatever location you choose. Your appointment is held virtually which means you will get to choose between:

  • Phone counseling: With this service, it’s as easy as answering a phone call from your counselor at the agreed-upon time.
  • Video counseling: If you prefer to chat with your therapist over video, this option would be great for you. Rather than answering a phone call at your set time, you will receive a link that takes you to your virtual appointment.

You and your counselor can decide on which method you prefer. The flexibility of online counseling services makes it easier to communicate with your therapist when and where you need to. No more rushing from home or work to get to your appointment on time. All you need is a quiet space and service connection.

The Benefits of Online Counseling

There are more benefits to receiving counseling virtually than just the convenience of it. Here are several reasons why you should give it a try:

  1. It’s proven to be effective: If you are worried about how effective online therapy is compared to visiting in office, don’t worry! Research shows that working with an online therapist is effective. There’s no need to wonder if you are sacrificing any progress you would make with in-person counseling. However, if you find that online counseling is not the right option for you, that’s okay too!)
  2. You might find it easier to open up: Because you aren’t sitting directly in front of your counselor, you might find it to be easier to open up virtually. Try both the virtual and phone options if you are curious about how you might feel different. But remember, you are capable of the same progress regardless of what method you choose.
  3. It’s dependable: You don’t need to worry about the myriad of external factors when you choose to receive online therapy. No matter where you are or what happened during your daily routine, you will always just be one click away from your scheduled appointment time.
  4. You have more flexibility: Because you are virtually meeting with your therapist, it allows your therapist to offer more available times for you to schedule an appointment.

These are all great reasons to consider a teletherapy appointment, and there’s even more! Every person’s situation is unique, and it is our mission to provide you with the most comprehensive plan of care. We will equip you with the tools and tips necessary for you to not only benefit you when future conflicts arise, but help your overall mental wellbeing improve for a better way of living. I've known Andrea for a number of years. Working with children is her passion. She just loves kids and will work diligently to achieve any child and parental goals. A firm believer that early detection/ treatment of childhood problems is the key for the development into a healthy adult. She works closely with parents and family members, as they play a crucial role in the child's successes. Always interested in expanding her knowledge base and keeps informed of new information related to her specialities. An extremely good listener and communicator that takes an active role in working with children and their family. I would highly recommend Andrea to anyone that is seeking an experienced counselor for their child.
