What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

The approaches that I use for online therapy are the same that I would use for in-person therapy; they include acceptance and commitment therapy and polyvagal approaches. I prefer these two because of the focus on values and moving toward intended goals regardless of the client's emotional state. ACT also teaches that there is no such thing as “good” or “bad” emotions. Polyvagal theory works within the nervous system to assist with emotional regulation. Utilizing these two approaches allows for more targeted and real-time assistance.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach a variety of tools in individual therapy to help assist with emotional regulation, communication, relational issues, decision-making, etc.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know that a client is making meaningful progress when they inform me of the changes they have made and display decreased emotional reactivity to the themes surrounding what brought them into therapy.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can practice learned strategies in addition to checking out suggested supplemental information in between sessions to supplement their time in individual therapy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

One of the things I think would be helpful in preparing for therapy is for someone to know that it is okay to feel uncomfortable or nervous starting therapy.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

What Are the Advantages of Online Counseling Services?

Online counseling services can come with numerous benefits, as long as they’re legitimate. People need to beware of self-described mental health services that are really unlicensed life coaching or text messaging. At Thriveworks in Tallahassee, FL, online talk therapy is fully licensed and of premium quality. Some advantages of virtual counseling that clients appreciate are the following:

  • Scheduling flexibility. Clients aren’t limited to meeting with their provider during office hours. They can meet with providers when it’s most convenient for them, including times in the evening and on the weekends.
  • Affordability. Clients don’t have to take off work to drive to a downtown location in order to attend therapy sessions. This can save time and money.
  • Comfort and familiarity. Some clients find that it’s easier to open up when they’re at home, in their familiar environment.
  • Accommodating for illness or disability. Clients who have difficulty leaving home can still have sessions with their provider.
  • Rural access. Clients who live in rural areas can still access a diverse range of providers.
  • Freedom. Clients can travel for business or pleasure and still make their therapy appointments.

What Is Online Therapy Like?

Online therapy is similar to in-person therapy in that it’s a live chat that relies on nonverbal as well as verbal communication. The online therapy program at Thriveworks in Tallahassee, FL can effectively incorporate a broad range of therapeutic approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and couples counseling. As long as you have an internet connection and you know how to click on a link in your email, you’re ready for online therapy. You can do it from your office or couch. You can do it with your cat in your lap or your kids in the next room. And Thriveworks offers an array of licensed providers who can do online sessions:

  • Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs)
  • Psychologists (PhDs or PsyDs)
  • Licensed professional counselors (LPCs)
