Mary Lou Macarius is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who specializes in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral issues, grief, parenting issues, school issues, stress, women's issues, and child therapy. She has more than 20 years of experience, working at institutions such as the Pacific Lutheran University Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic and Good Samaritan Behavioral Health Care Center, as well as in public schools serving students K-12th grade, working independently in Comfort Counseling. She also has experience serving individuals from six years old to 65 years old from her time at the Renton Counseling Center. She is a clinical member of The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Mary Lou received a Bachelor of Social Work from Eastern Washington University and a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pacific Lutheran University. She utilizes multiple treatment approaches including, but not limited to, solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and structural family therapy. Mary Lou's dominant practicing theories are those of structural family therapy, which focuses on the ways in which families function and the changes that need to be made in the family structure to help them function more effectively, and solution-focused theory, which looks at the solutions that the client brings to therapy for coping with problems and builds on the client’s successes. She also likes to use some narrative therapy, which is focused on changing the way that you look at your life or problems.

Mary Lou is a trauma survivor and comes from an immigrant family, both of which influence the work that she does on a day-to-day basis. This, along with her clinical experience, allows her to support and understand her clients in unique ways.

Get to know Mary Lou

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

After dealing with all that I had been through, I wanted to be able to help others work through their concerns as well

What types of clients do you work with best?

Children, adolescents, and adults.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

"I am a therapist and a client. I am capable of holding space and I also need to be held. I am honored to do this work and I also need a break, I am needed and have needs. I am brave. I am strong. I am soft, I am a therapist. I am human." - Unknown

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I look forward to increased flexibility and time back to myself as well as increased benefits.

What inspires you?

My faith and client progress.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Clients can expect the opportunity to share openly what their concerns are and to experience someone who will listen to their concerns.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I want to begin building the therapeutic relationship and set client goals for their therapeutic experience.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I am a compassionate, supporting, and caring professional that will help encourage you to meet your goals.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

Gardening/yard work, walks, reading-- my favorite author is Charles Dickens.

Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?

I worked with a young lady from the ages of 12-13 years old with a diagnosis of ADHD. She had struggles with listening and following directions both at school and at home. By the end of our time together, she reported having fully met 3 out of 4 goals and partially met the fourth. She was successful in school and things at home had improved significantly.
