What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in dialectical behavior therapy is the use of the wise mind. I find the best benefit in the wise mind because it helps balance the rational mind and emotional mind while meeting anyone where they currently are.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

I teach the following tools in dialectical behavior therapy:

  • Wise Mind: Helping to find the balance between emotional thoughts and rational thoughts.
  • TIPP: Strategies to help change your body chemistry to help reduce extreme emotion.
  • DEARMAN: An outline to help you more effectively communicate by saying “no” or asking for something from someone.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy when the client is able to see and accept two opposing thoughts existing at the same time, such as “I am doing my best, and I can do better,” regularly utilizes therapy skills without thinking about using them, and expresses an improvement in emotion regulation.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in dialectical behavior therapy with various DBT workbooks available to buy online, such as the one by Matthew McKay, PhD!

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

To prepare for their first dialectical behavior therapy session, an individual can remind themselves that they are doing the best that they can, therapy will help them do better, and change takes time, consistency, and accepting change.

Starting Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in Richmond

What is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)?

At Thriveworks, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) primarily concentrates on assisting individuals in emotion regulation, enhancing interpersonal relationships, and acquiring effective coping strategies for managing stress and emotional difficulties.

How does DBT work?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets your personal challenges. You may work with your DBT therapist to maintain diary cards to monitor progress, emphasizing validation and support in the therapeutic relationship. DBT follows a stage-based approach, prioritizing crisis reduction initially and life satisfaction.

What is DBT best used for?

DBT was initially developed to address the needs of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, its versatile approach has enabled its application to a wide range of mental health conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety, depression, stress, and anger issues.

What are the 4 pillars of DBT?

The 4 pillars of DBT are mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

Is DBT better than EMDR?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have distinct purposes and aren’t inherently superior or inferior to one another. DBT is most effective for managing emotional regulation, personality disorders, and interpersonal challenges, while EMDR is specifically tailored for individuals with trauma-related conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Is DBT conducted in person or online?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) with therapists at Thriveworks in Richmond, VA is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many months is DBT?

The duration of a standard DBT program is typically around 24 weeks, which is roughly six months. The actual number of sessions will vary depending on the issues you wish to address.

Thriveworks makes everything easy and seamless. I appreciate having providers that are able to connect and see progress notes because they are part of the same system. My therapist, Paula O'Leary, is an absolutely wonderful therapist and is helping me transform my life. She is able to work with me in the way I need it and helps me more every single session. Additionally, my Psychiatrist Dr. Ileana Asanache is also spectacular and is the only psychiatrist I've ever felt comfortable with. She listens to my concerns and needs and eases me into every medication/transition so that I am comfortable. This new med regimen she has me on has literally changed my life for the better. I the following diagnoses: Bipolar 2, Anxiety, PTSD, Nightmare Disorder, and we are exploring a SUD disorder as well. They have helped me not just with my mental health, but my addiction, my career, my relationships/boundaries, and overall are helping me improve my life immensely.

I appreciate her identifying my tells in my body language and helping me see them as well. She lets me talk through my experiences. She validates my experiences and has shed light on them with her objective perspective. She was honest enough to tell me when I needed more support and refer me to an IOP program. I am thankful for that. She educates me on her techniques and talks through strategies. .
