Attachment Based Family Therapy – Family Counselors and Family Therapists in Media, PA, Delaware County

Is my child depressed or suicidal? How can I relate to my child? How can I support my child with their mental health issue? Your child and family may benefit from Attachment Based Family Therapy.

What is ABFT and how can it help?

The goal of Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT) is to strengthen attachment bonds and repair ruptures in the relationship between an adolescent and their parent or guardian. ABFT aims to facilitate family cohesion, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and organization, in order to create secure and protective relationships that can help adolescents dealing with suicidal thoughts and depression. ABFT is the only manualized, empirically informed family therapy model specifically designed to target depressed and suicidal adolescents between the ages of 12-18. ABFT incorporates components from other family therapy models, such as multidimensional family therapy, emotionally focused Therapy, and structural family therapy.

Attachment Based Family Treatment consists of 5 components:

  1. Reframing the therapy to focus on interpersonal development
  2. Adolescence Alliance Building
  3. Parent Alliance Building
  4. Facilitating conversations to repair ruptures
  5. Promoting autonomy and competence in adolescence

Can AFBT help my family

Therapists who use ABFT focus on the core conflicts between family members. The misunderstandings and failures that happen in relationships between family members, and vulnerable emotions that occur both in session and outside of sessions. They emphasize the instinctual desire that people have to feel securely attached to others and use that attachment as the primary mechanism for change. With ABFT adolescents begin to perceive their parents as caring, protective and autonomy-granting, and the family learns to provide a secure base for helping the adolescent to withstand and grow from life’s stressors. As a result decreasing the depression and suicidality.
