What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is the Gottman Method and emotion-focused interventions. I prefer the Gottman Method because it teaches very specific, intentional tools that can be used for communication. Emotion-focused therapy teaches the partner to understand vulnerable feelings and triggers that can be sensitive areas for your partner. It teaches the partner to have empathy and communicate from a place that is not as triggering for your partner.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling: I statements (using a feeling word and I rather than blaming the other person), reflection (repeating what your partner has said with a feeling word), how to apologize, responding vs. reacting, asking for clarification and using feeling words to express vulnerable feelings instead of using cover feelings such as anger and sadness.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when I can see them using the tools in and out of sessions, resentment and anger have lifted, and both partners express that they feel emotionally and physically connected.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling by practicing the tools on their own outside of sessions and making time to connect with each other. Additionally, they can have the willingness to meet the needs of their partner, even if the need is not essential to themselves.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can ask yourself, How willing am I to change vs. how much do I expect counseling to fix my partner?
