What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is using a person-centered, mindfulness, strengths-based, and compassion-focused approach. I place substantial significance on how an individual’s childhood, environment, relationships, and psychosocial characteristics contribute to their mental health. I find the best benefit in getting to know each other in the beginning because cultivating trust in the therapeutic relationship is key to our work together.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I utilize a holistic approach to collaborate with clients, while also highlighting the benefits that physical activity, nature, nutrition, sleep, and mindfulness have on our overall well-being. Some tools we can explore together:

  • Values - Reviewing your values using a values list and exploring which resonate and how they are connected to your dreams and daily life.
  • Self-care - Developing a grounding self-care practice that seamlessly embodies your values, daily life tasks, and future goals, balancing daily rhythms and routines.
  • Mindfulness practice (emotion regulation tools) - Becoming aware of the mind, body, emotions, and feelings connection through breath work, movement, and exploring coping tools.
  • Communication and connection (interpersonal effectiveness tools) - These are tools to clearly express your needs, listen to others, and build connections with others. We can use templates, worksheets, and role-play.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they report less distress as they move toward their goals.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

While in therapy, the client can practice and explore the tools they want to use outside therapy. Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy with by practicing what we do together in sessions. This might include but is not limited to a sustainable self-care and mindfulness practice that includes breath work, movement, and routine. Clients may also begin to map their days and reflect on their values.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

For our first session, I hope the person feels authentically seen, heard, and understood as a whole person, so we collaborate on their treatment goals and have a clear path that guides our work together. Much of the clinical work is based on relationships. It’s okay to build this at your pace; let’s take this one step at a time and get to know each other. During our first meeting, I’d like to understand: What brings you to meet with me? What would be helpful for you? What do you hope to get out of our meetings together? As we get to know each other, the answers to these questions may evolve. That’s okay — we’re in this together. If it's helpful, feel free to write some thoughts down and we can review and explore what's on your mind.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

4 Reasons to Try Online Therapy

You might still be contemplating your therapy options, from in-person therapy to online therapy. If this is the case, consider the following 4 reasons to try online therapy:

  1. It’s a convenient option: A drawback to counseling or therapy is that it’s another appointment we have to try to fit into our schedules. Not to mention, sometimes we spend more time getting to the appointment than we do working with our therapist. Online therapy offers the perfect solution to this problem
  2. It offers comfort: Online therapy also allows you to work with your therapist or counselor from the comfort of your own home. All you have to do is make sure that you have phone or internet access to attend your therapy session via phone call or video chat. If that’s covered, you can attend your session from home or anywhere else you choose.
  3. It’s effective: Research shows that online therapy, such as phone therapy or video counseling, is beneficial and effective. Additionally, it shows that clients prefer these online therapy options to in-person sessions! They find that they are able to make the same progress with their therapist online as they do in-person.
  4. It’s an affordable option: Did you know that a lot of insurance companies now cover online therapy counseling options? If you know that your insurance doesn’t cover online therapy, don’t worry—Thriveworks Counseling in Lexington, MA has affordable rates.

If you’re looking for a convenient, comfortable, effective, and affordable therapy option, online therapy might be the right option for you. Reach out to Thriveworks to schedule your first appointment.
