What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

My approach to counseling people experiencing grief and loss is first to listen, validate, and bear witness to their experience. I also find that reframing this experience is often very helpful, as people tend to feel they should “get over” the loss of someone or something very important to them. Leaving room for the thought that you may always feel a sense of grief/loss when someone/something is so important, but that you will learn to incorporate that loss into your life can be very helpful.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

Some of the tools that can be helpful in processing grief and loss include mindfulness, developing or finding meaningful ways to remember and make space for the loss, and other reflective practices such as journaling. That said, every person is unique, and I try to find ways that make sense to the individual rather than taking a prescribed approach.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

I can see that a client is making progress when they begin to find more joy in life and have more hope for the future.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Clients generally make more progress when they set aside time in between appointments to practice some of the suggestions from sessions and let me know what was most helpful in the next session.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for a first grief and loss counseling session, a person can think about what would be most helpful to share during the session. For example, if someone is having very distressing mental health symptoms that are interfering with their daily life in a significant way, that would be crucial to discuss. It is also important to communicate preferences and the meaning this loss has for a person so that I can meet their needs better.
