Hear from our clinicians

What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Laura: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is about establishing a connection. Virtual sessions can run the risk of a certain level of disconnect for some, but with careful consideration, it's possible to bridge the gap through open acceptance, unconditional positive regard, and finding a common ground.

Nicole: My go-to approach in helping people in both online and in-person therapy has a primary focus on listening and developing problem solutions together. I do this with my mix of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), person-centered therapy, mindfulness, and psychoeducation approaches. I enjoy practicing these elements in sessions with my clients because it helps with processing and gaining perspective in order to identify what needs to change and the barriers that have been in place that we aren’t ok with holding anymore compared with the benefits.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Laura: I teach the following tools in online therapy: emotional regulation (ways to change how you are feeling), distress tolerance (ways to coexist with unchangeable factors), coping/calming skills (ways to remove stress, anxiety, and motor tension), mindfulness (ways to connect with peacefulness and relaxation), interpersonal effectiveness (ways to interact and engage with others comfortably), communication skills (ways to express yourself), conflict resolution (ways to resolve problems and fights), intrapersonal growth (ways to grow healthy self-awareness, self-esteem, and self-efficacy).

Nicole: I teach typically the same tools in either platform of online or in-person. Some standard tools that are applicable, regardless of what our focus is going to be, can be:

  • Effective communication
  • Identifying and utilizing coping skills
  • Identifying barriers
  • Developing boundaries

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Laura: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when their story of what happened is the same, but their reaction or understanding is different. Seeing the shift in perspective demonstrates such growth.

Nicole: When clients change their frequency in sessions and we know we are giving more time to practicing skills outside of sessions, we may be moving more towards needing less support. They will start using tools learned from our sessions for emotional maintenance and we just don’t need to talk as often.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Laura: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by practicing their coping skills for only a couple of minutes a day; 2-3 minutes a day is better than an hour a week. Clients can also practice self-care as much as possible.

Nicole: Give enough time and space to think about what we talk about in therapy outside of therapy. A lot of times, we talk about it, but we don’t see the action steps of implementing them outside of sessions, so we stay stagnant. Make the change, do the thing, and that would be honoring the experience and investment in yourself the most.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Laura: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can make sure you have a quiet space for privacy, test your device speaker and camera, and ensure a reliable signal.

Nicole: To prepare for your first online therapy session, pick a cozy and private place to have a session, make sure you have your charging accessories as needed, and review our consent forms. Everything is in those consent forms has what to expect and anticipate from the process, but we usually don’t give enough time for a thorough read together. I promise it is beneficial and worth your time.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your speicifc needs and with wom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Cherry Hill, NJ accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

We are all, in some way, struggling right now. With grief, loneliness, guilt, low self-esteem, financial instability, lack of fulfillment, even boredom. We are all, too, capable of working through these struggles and learning from the obstacles before us—so that next time, we are better equipped to overcome them and continue on with our lives.

“Strength comes from struggle. When you learn to see your struggles as opportunities to become stronger, better, wiser, your thinking shifts from, ‘I can’t do this,’ to, ‘I must do this.’” –Toni Sorenson

The catch is that sometimes doing so requires a little help, and that’s okay! We are human beings—our human nature relies on our communities to support us and lift us up. If you are struggling, with any of the aforementioned problems or another problem entirely, consider working with a counselor at Thriveworks Cherry Hill, NJ. We have skilled, caring counselors, therapists, life coaches, and psychologists on our team who would be honored to work with you.

Thriveworks Cherry Hill, NJ has online counseling opportunities, which enable you to work with a mental health professional from the security of home. You’ll either answer your provider’s call or hop into a video chat at the time of your session(s). It’s that simple. If you’re interested in scheduling an online counseling session, just call (856) 208-4396. We will get you scheduled.

4 Reasons to Give Online Therapy a Try

If you choose to give online counseling a try (or you’re considering it), you’ll have a few options. You can choose to work with you counselor or therapist on the phone or in a video chat for each session. Regardless, you can expect to experience the following benefits of online counseling at Thriveworks Cherry Hill:

  1. It’s super convenient: Perhaps the most obvious benefit of online therapy is how convenient it is. You don’t have to leave your house, which means you also don’t have to sit in traffic, drive in unfavorable weather conditions, or even change out of your loungewear. All you have to do is make sure your phone or laptop is charged and that you have service or internet to connect with your counselor at the time of your appointment.
  2. It offers safety and security: Additionally, online counseling allows you to attend your session from the safety and security of home. Certain conditions and circumstances even require us to stay home for our own safety, such as COVID-19. Fortunately, you can still get the help or support you need in therapy by simply attending your session over the phone or in a videoconference. And you don’t have to worry about risking your health or safety.
  3. It’s the comfortable option: In addition to convenience, safety, and security, online counseling often proves to be the more comfortable option, physically and mentally. First, physically, because you can attend from your cozy couch or bed! Second, mentally and emotionally, as many people find that it’s easier for them to open up over the phone or video versus in-person.
  4. It’s affordable: Gone are the days when insurance companies wouldn’t cover online counseling services. Today, many are covering online counseling by video and some are starting to cover online counseling by phone too! Additionally, Thriveworks Cherry Hill offers affordable self-pay options.

The above are major highlights of online counseling. If you’re weighing your options and deciding whether in-person counseling or online counseling is right for you, consider these benefits. Either way, we are more than happy to work with you and help you make major improvements in your life.

I initially had a fantastic experience with Thriveworks, and I was thrilled with the service they provided. My journey to find the right therapist was successful, and I happily recommended Thriveworks to friends and family. However, my positive experience took a turn when I discovered that the therapist I connected with does not accept my insurance. Embarking on the path to seek help required a lot of courage on my part, and I fully committed to the process. In just 4 or 5 sessions, I developed a strong connection with my therapist. Unfortunately, the realization that she could no longer continue due to insurance constraints has left me feeling disappointed. Now, I find myself having to start the therapeutic journey all over again, and this has diminished my overall satisfaction with the service.
