Betty's experience working and studying at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico gave her the unique opportunity to see disability from both sides of the table—both as a student observing the struggles and challenges that students with varied disabilities face in school and as a clinical psychologist intern and licensed rehabilitation counselor.

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I became a counselor because of the trust, kindness and unconditional positive regard that others saw in me . I felt if others trusted me enough share their struggles that I needed to learn how best to help them in addition to just being a listening ear and heart.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I like working with clients who like to learn about themselves and what are the barriers that may be keeping them from being their authentic self. I do psycho-education with my clients and together we work to explore, challenge, grow and become insightful as to the triggers in their life they may have them "stuck" from moving forward with their lives.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with clients who are willing to learn through psycho education and willing to carefully and with compassion unpack the hidden pains from their past that may be interfering with their quality of life in the present.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
One thing I wish all clients to know is that the more you avoid hurts from the past and present, the more it invades any present issues you are having because it just compounds the pain and increases the mental, emotional and physical stress.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice at Thriveworks because of the opportunities it provides for me to work with a variety of ages and mental health issues.
What inspires you?
My clients and their well being and being able to be an instrument that assists them in reaching their fullest potential in life inspires me.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first session will include an understanding of online therapy, confidentiality, attendance policy, and an exploration of the clients needs and goals and expectations for therapy, establish rapport as well as provide support and questions for exploration.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to be able to build rapport , trust and unconditional positive regard and warm acceptance so my clients feel safe and can share their thoughts, feelings and behavior comfortably.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I provide Psycho-education on self esteem, building self compassion, assertiveness, anger management procrastination, etc.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I play guitar, paint a bit, love to read mystery books, take walks, garden.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am honest, kind and gentle and non judgmental.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
I once had a client who experienced early childhood traumas and never told anyone including his parents I worked with him to build trust and once he was ready to tell his story he expressed that his whole life changed for the better because he was finally able to express years of hidden /avoided pain and self loathing.
