What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is to explore the client's biased depressive self-talk and shift them to reality-based cognitive messages that enhance self-confidence. I find the best benefit in engaging the client in behavioral activation to increase their activity level because it has been shown to improve their quality of life.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression counseling: dissecting core beliefs and implementing behavioral strategies to overcome depression.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they are able to verbalize a clearer understanding of the cause of depression and actively engage in activities to reach their goals and resolve their current interpersonal problems.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with self-care, learning to acknowledge their feelings, and considering their environment and relationships to determine if any of those are contributing factors to their depressive state.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can be ready to take active steps to make changes.

The thing I appreciated most was that my provider allowed me to understand why I feel the way I do with no judgment. She allowed me to see that I’m only human and a person who has been through extreme life altering events. She gave me the opportunity to see how sports impacted me as a person and utilized it as an analogy so I could understand my situation.
