What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people with PTSD is EMDR. I find the best benefit in EMDR therapy because it helps address the mind-body connection, a process that tends to happen at a slower pace with traditional talk therapy.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach the following tools in PTSD: recognizing triggers/automatic cognitions, de-escalating techniques, and psychoeducation about distorted thinking.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

A client is making meaningful progress when they are able to notice flashbacks or memories of the trauma without their body reacting to it.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

To supplement PTSD therapy, a client can work on identifying distorted thoughts and challenging them. They can also work together with me on preventative cope-ahead plans.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for their first PTSD session, someone can begin to document recognized triggers and plan for having some quiet time after the session for 1-2 hours.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
