What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

I find that it is difficult to just change a feeling. Often, depressed people need to find some behavior changes to support feeling good. At the same time, depressed people often have negative thinking patterns that just keep them down. Learning how to break out of these thinking patterns is often very important in dealing with depression.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

There are many “tools” that are helpful for clients with depression:

  • Confronting negative thinking patterns
  • Exploring the rules we feel we “have” to live by
  • Working with clients on self-acceptance
  • Working with clients on self-talk
  • Exploring behaviors that support feeling good

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I often see depressed clients getting better when they find some spark of energy. This is one reason managing our behavior patterns can be so important (think sleep and exercise). I often see early progress when people start giving themselves a break in their self-talk.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Many depressed people struggle with being active. Finding ways to increase activity levels can make us feel better. Being aware of how we think moment to moment is important, as it gives us a chance to confront garbage thinking before it causes problems.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

I find that people with depression often have difficulty with change. Be ready for change. It takes effort and it’s uncomfortable, but so does being depressed.

Dr LaDisha Smith is both very professional and very sweet. I have had two sessions so far and I already feel very comfortable and safe. She's able to keep me on topic, and the perfect combination of soft spoken, and serious that works amazing for me.

My provider has been very gentle working with me. He has allowed me the time to get comfortable. The paid off in the most recent session where we went deep in why I behave like I do and why my behavior is problematic. I look forward to the next few sessions as I learn how to overcome my issues.
