Couples counseling is a form of therapy in which the therapist—who specializes in helping couples—assists clients with improving relationship satisfaction. The exact approach to helping couples will vary from client to client, as every relationship is different. Each has different needs and requirements. That said, couples counseling often involves the following elements:
To start, your counselor will likely ask you a few standard questions to understand the history and current standing of your relationship, as well as where you hope for it to go in the future. Then, the couples counselor will help you identify the issues at hand, establish goals for treatment, and begin to put together a clear plan for treatment. When you get to the treatment phase, your counselor will assist you in understanding why your relationship has taken a turn for the worst, or how to prevent it from taking a turn for the worst.
Again, your counselor will customize your counseling sessions to best fit your needs and goals for couples counseling. That said, there are common issues discussed in couples counseling. For example, couples counseling can help you address, manage, and/or move forward from challenges like:
All of these challenges merit the intervention of couples counseling. It might feel like it’s impossible to work through these issues, but couples counseling can help you realize new solutions. Additionally, if the challenges in your relationship do prove unresolvable and you decide to part ways, a counselor can help you do so cordially. All in all, your counselor is on your side. Their goal is to help you and your partner live happier lives.
