Psychologists are mental health professionals that provide psychotherapy services and diagnoses for their clients. They have more research-focused training than most therapists, as they are more medically educated and receive a more general education about therapeutic approaches and theory.
Thriveworks psychologists in Kansas City, MO provide standard psychotherapy services, tailoring treatment to each client and their unique concerns. As we briefly touched on, psychologists are trained mental health professionals who specialize in a variety of fields. Psychologists can assist you with everything from mental illnesses to support in making big decisions. They utilize various methods and techniques to help their clients achieve their goals and work through the problems standing in their way.
Talk therapy is the most traditional and common form of therapy. This is when you sit down with your therapist to talk about how you feel, what you’re facing, and what your goals are. You might be asked to address a phobia or stressor in order to work through your thoughts and reactions. In other instances, you could be rewarding positive behavior or thoughts to train your brain to shift its focus.
Your licensed psychologist might utilize the above methods as well as any others they might see fit for your situation. Psychologists do not prescribe their clients medication. Suppose you and your therapist feel like you might benefit from taking a medication. In that case, they’ll work closely with your primary care provider or psychiatrist to ensure the correct medication is prescribed for your needs.
