What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is establishing a strong relationship with the client and addressing their concerns first. I find the best benefit in cognitive behavioral therapy because I can teach the client how to change their thoughts, feelings, and behavior.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression counseling:

  • Journaling, or writing your thoughts and feelings
  • Positive self-talk
  • Self-care
  • Exercising
  • Talking to friends about your concerns
  • Writing your positive traits and posting them on the mirror where you can read them daily
  • Spending time in nature
  • Listening to positive music

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they report fewer depressive symptoms.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by doing their homework.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can think about your symptoms and what you want to change.
