What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My primary method for treating depression involves utilizing therapy techniques that cater to both the practical and underlying needs of each individual client. This typically involves a combination of cognitive behavioral approaches and emotion-focused techniques. I've found that no single approach works best for every client. By adopting an eclectic approach, I aim to tailor the treatment to the specific needs of each client. The ultimate goal is for the client to feel understood, acknowledged, and supported throughout their journey towards healing.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

The following tools may be used in depression counseling:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tools: These are activities, worksheets, or exercises that are designed to help individuals identify and challenge their negative thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. They often include exercises such as identifying core beliefs, cognitive distortions, or behavior tracking.
  • Mindfulness: Mindfulness tools help individuals focus on the present moment, reduce stress, and enhance self-awareness. These can include guided meditation recordings, mindfulness apps, or activities like deep breathing exercises and body scans.
  • Psychodynamic therapy: Psychodynamic therapy explores unconscious patterns and past experiences that may influence current emotions and behaviors. It aims to increase self-awareness and insight into the root causes of depression.
  • Trauma-informed tools: Tools designed for trauma-informed therapy might include grounding techniques like sensory items (stress balls, textured objects), safe space visualization exercises, or trauma timelines to help clients process their experiences.
  • Emotion regulation tools: Emotion regulation tools help individuals identify and regulate their emotions effectively.
  • Narrative therapy techniques: Narrative therapy tools include storytelling prompts, genograms, and externalization techniques. Clients use these tools to reconstruct their personal narratives, explore alternative perspectives, and separate themselves from their problems.
  • Breathing exercises: Breathing tools and techniques, such as square breathing or diaphragmatic breathing, help clients manage anxiety, reduce stress, and increase relaxation.
  • Self-compassion tools: Self-compassion tools include exercises designed to help individuals cultivate self-kindness, mindfulness, and common humanity. Clients learn to treat themselves with greater understanding and acceptance.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they begin to demonstrate increased and effective utilization of coping strategies, show improvements in managing the challenges they face, and build confidence in who they are, reporting minimized depressive symptoms.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with workshops, self-help resources, journaling exercises, mindfulness practices, or support groups to further enhance their mental and emotional well-being.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first session, you can start by jotting down any thoughts or feelings you've been experiencing lately and note any specific goals or outcomes you hope to achieve through therapy. Therapy is a collaborative process, so being prepared to engage and communicate openly can be beneficial.

The Most Common Forms of Depression

Depression comes in many different forms with many different symptoms. It can occur seasonally or chronically and can be impacted by everything from genetics to your environment.

Some of the more common types of depression include the following:

  • Major depressive disorder may be caused by genetics, hormones, stress, or childhood experiences. Its symptoms include lethargy, disinterest, tiredness, sadness, and suicidal thoughts.
  • Persistent depressive disorder has the same causes as major depressive disorder but it lasts for two or more years. It can be accompanied by feelings of fatigue, helplessness, and irritability.
  • Seasonal depressive disorder is caused by changes in the season and typically occurs during the cold autumn and winter months due, at least in part, to the lack of sunlight. It may cause weight gain, tiredness, and intense feelings of sadness.
  • Bipolar disorder may have a number of contributing factors, including genetics, substance abuse, trauma, or extreme stress. This mood disorder can fall into many different categories, including bipolar I and bipolar II, depending on the frequency and intensity of your emotional highs and lows.
  • Postpartum depression is typically caused by changes in hormones, a history of depression, or extreme stress following childbirth. Common symptoms include mood swings, insomnia, and anxiety.
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder can occur due to an abnormal response to hormonal changes during menstruation. Its symptoms include hopelessness, extreme fatigue, and heart palpitations.

If depression symptoms are impacting your life, please schedule an appointment with us at Thriveworks in Sugar Land, TX.

I love my therapist, Jennifer O'Brien. She is kind, patient and has helped me out tremendously when I was at the end of my rope. I take her suggestions seriously and use them. She helps me see situations in a different way that is positive rather than my negative way of thinking. I would highly recommend her to anyone. If I have to cancel or reschedule she is very flexible and accomodating. And, I can do my sessions from the privacy of my own home.
