If your provider discusses prescribing Wellbutrin, you might wonder how it compares with Adderall and if Wellbutrin gives you energy like Adderall. Although Wellbutrin and Adderall belong to different groups of medications, they do work in some similar ways.

Both medications are considered norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRI). This means they help increase natural levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. Research shows these neurotransmitters are necessary for brain functions including focus, learning, mood and memory. Both medications may also boost energy levels, improve motivation and reduce fatigue.

Yes, this is possible. MDD or depression can often cause low energy (fatigue) and sleepiness. Studies of people with depression taking bupropion showed they had improved energy and motivation and less fatigue. Scientists believe this may be due to Wellbutrin’s effects in boosting dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain.

It’s important to know that Wellbutrin has a warning that it can cause episodes of mania. Symptoms of mania can include increased energy levels, trouble sleeping, engaging in potentially risky behavior, talking faster than normal and having racing thoughts or ideas. If you have a history of bipolar disorder, mania, or certain other mental health conditions, talk with your provider. They can discuss the risks and benefits of Wellbutrin with you.

What Is Wellbutrin?

Wellbutrin (bupropion) is the brand name for bupropion, a prescription medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), commonly called depression. It is also approved to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It comes in two long-acting dosage forms, Wellbutrin SR and Wellbutrin XL tablets. 

In addition, the brand name medication Zyban (bupropion) is approved for smoking cessation to help people stop smoking. Contrave (bupropion and naltrexone) is approved for use as a weight loss medication.

Providers may also prescribe Wellbutrin off-label to treat ADHD. Off-label use describes when a medication is prescribed for a purpose other than its approved use(s). This is a common practice by prescribers when there is scientific data that shows a medication works to treat a certain condition, even though it hasn’t been approved for that use. 

Limited research shows that bupropion may improve some ADHD symptoms. However, more research is needed to fully understand the medication’s possible benefits for ADHD. Your provider may discuss Wellbutrin as an ADHD treatment option with you if it offers more advantages over a stimulant medication like Adderall, or if you cannot tolerate Adderall. They may also suggest Wellbutrin if you have both ADHD and depression symptoms.

Precautions and Warnings of Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin has a boxed warning from the FDA about the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. This is a serious risk warning about the effects of a medication that may be dangerous. The risk is higher in people 24 years and younger taking antidepressants. Wellbutrin is not approved for use in those younger than 18 years of age.

If you’re prescribed Wellbutrin, your provider will monitor you closely during treatment for changes in your mood, thoughts or behavior. Call your provider immediately if you have any symptoms of worsening mood including thoughts of suicide. 

Wellbutrin may also increase the risk of seizures, high blood pressure, eye problems, and certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, and manic episodes. Tell your provider about all your health conditions.

What Is Adderall?

Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine) is FDA-approved to treat ADHD and narcolepsy. Adderall XR is only approved for ADHD in children and adults. Adderall belongs to a group of medications called central nervous system stimulants. It is a Schedule II federally controlled substance due to its high potential for misuse and dependence.  

The exact way Adderall works in the body is not known. However, research shows stimulants such as amphetamine may work to improve ADHD symptoms by slowing the reuptake and increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. 

Precautions and Warnings of Adderall

Adderall has a boxed warning from the FDA about the risk of misuse and dependence. This is a serious warning about the medication’s effects that may be dangerous. Misuse of Adderall may increase your risk for serious side effects such as substance use disorder, heart-related problems and in rare cases even sudden death. 

Your provider will discuss the risks of Adderall before prescribing the medication. Be sure to tell your provider if you have a history of substance misuse or addiction. If your provider prescribes Adderall, they’ll monitor you carefully while you’re taking the medication.
