Starting Couples therapy

What is Couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Need more help deciding?

Jessica and Janae have gone through a lot of difficult times together. When they told their families about their relationship, not everyone was accepting. For some time, their relationship was the only thing that they had. Now, after two years, their families are coming around to accept their love and happiness.

This has lifted a huge weight off their chests, but now, Jessica and Janae are struggling with different relationship problems. Little things that they used to not care about are pushing them apart.

Jessica and Janae decide that they need to talk to a mental health professional about their current issues as well as the past trauma they’ve endured. Their couples therapist helps them learn effective communication skills, coping mechanisms, and ultimately guides them to a happier and healthier relationship.

All relationships take a lot of work. Maybe you’ve only been dating for several months, or perhaps you’ve been married for over 15 years. Regardless of how much time has passed in your relationship, working with a mental health professional can prove to be a smart, beneficial decision.

At Thriveworks Counseling in Flagstaff, our marriage counselors and couples therapists have helped many relationships thrive. If you’ve been searching for a dedicated, compassionate therapist or counselor, you’ve come to the right place. When you’re ready to take the next step, reach out to our office by giving us a call.

What Is Couples Therapy?

Here at Thriveworks, we understand that every couple and relationship is unique. That’s why we devote time to creating individualized treatment plans for each and every one of our clients. The counselors and therapists at our office have extensive training, education, and experience to help you tackle your issues quickly and efficiently.

During your beginning sessions, your counselor will assess you and your partner as individuals to better understand how to fix the problems you are facing and achieve the goals you’ve set in place. Then, based on your needs, they will create a special plan of action that will target all of your problem areas.

Why Should My Partner and I Decide to Pursue Therapy or Counseling?

It’s completely normal to have arguments and disagreements with your partner. It would be almost impossible to not run into conflict at some point. However, prolonged arguments, anger, and frequent bickering should be addressed immediately. If you’re still on the fence about whether or not you should pursue therapy, consider these questions:

  1. Have we tried everything we can to improve our relationship?
  2. Is there something from our past that we just can’t get over?
  3. Are we tired of constantly arguing about little things?

There are many reasons why couples might choose to work with a couples counselor. Some of the more common reasons are:

  • Infidelity or adultery
  • Lack of intimacy
  • No trust
  • Major life changes such as moving or getting a divorce
  • Poor communication
  • Grief and loss
  • Mental disorders such as depression and anxiety
  • Parenting disagreements
  • Financials train
  • Poor work/life balance
  • Opposing values and views
  • Low self-esteem
  • Jealousy

In some cases, you might not know exactly what is causing negative feelings towards your partner. Maybe just the thought of sitting down for dinner and talking to your partner about your day drives you crazy. Or, it could be as simple as wanting to establish clear responsibilities around the house.

Whatever the reason is, the counselors at Thriveworks in Flagstaff, AZ will work with you to identify where your problems are and improve them. You might work on communication techniques, building trust, increasing intimacy, and how to actively listen to your partner’s needs. We’re just a click or phone call away to get started.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
