With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.
Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Is Online Counseling Right for Me?
The answer is likely YES! Online counseling is able to address many of the same presenting problems as in-person counseling. Online counseling could assist with:
- Anxiety
- Panic Attacks
- Depression
- Marriage Issues
- Communication
- Parenting
- ADHD
- Substance Use
- Life Transitions
- School Issues
- Work Issues
- Relationships
- Grief and Loss
- Trauma Recovery
- PTSD
- And many others!
Online counseling may not be for you if you are younger than 6 years old (you’re probably not reading this) or have psychotic symptoms. As the old saying goes, “don’t knock it until you try it!” There’s nothing wrong with giving it a try for a few sessions and then choosing another option if you feel it’s not for you.
But, It’s Going To Be Expensive, Right?
Nope! In fact, most insurance companies cover online counseling services the same as they do counseling services in the office. There may be a copay involved that usually ranges from 10 to 30 dollars.
You might be able to find “free online counseling.” But, beware—it’s probably NOT counseling. In order for online counseling to be billed to insurance, the therapist providing the service must be licensed or license-eligible in the state where the service is being rendered. At Thriveworks Hanover, all of our therapists are Master’s Level Clinicians with training and experience providing online counseling.
Is Online Counseling Effective?
Yes! Research shows that online counseling can be as effective as in-person counseling! This study shows that internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy was as effective as in-office cognitive behavioral therapy.
