Get to know Debbie
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I became a psychiatric provider as I enjoy the helping field. I believe it is important to extend a hand towards those in need that may not otherwise have one offered to them.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are motivated for services, who are experiencing stressors due to life events, and are seeking guidance.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with those who are experiencing uncontrollable mood symptoms and are lacking coping skills for daily functioning.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that talk therapy is not only a mental health service but is an outlet to process emotions and feelings in a confidential setting.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice at Thriveworks because I enjoy providing therapeutic services and believe Thriveworks offers beneficial services to the populations served.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by other's stories as they touch on what defines them. I am also inspired by a person's motivation to change and how I can assist with that.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect me to establish a healthy rapport, build trust up front, and offer an open space to be vulnerable enough to share about themselves in the first session.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I would like to build their trust by informing them on what to expect, how I can assist, and emphasizing their self-determination in their process.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
Clients should know that if they do not feel they are a good fit, they will be offered referrals to assist in their search process.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I like to hike, spend time with family, attend college football games, and travel.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
One thing that defines me is that I am a diversified person in my friendships.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
A time I had success with a client was when I worked with a male patient who was struggling with his anger. Upon realization that his anger stemmed from a loss of sense of self, he was able to work through his heightened emotions using healthy coping mechanisms and emotion disregulation skills for improvement.
