What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in grief and loss counseling is giving them time, and letting them know it is not a linear process. Some days it will be ok then other days it will feel like they lost them all over again. I also encourage them to honor the loss and the feelings they are feeling.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

As far as tools in grief counseling, I try to equip them with ways to work through the emotions and feeling the emotions, as well as, and possibly more important let it go. I try to educate them that letting go is not forgetting.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress when they no longer think about the person every minute of everyday, and they can cope with the reminders.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in sessions using journaling methods (writing or art). They can also write a letter to the person depending on circumstances of the loss.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for the first grief counseling session, clients should have realistic expectations and be prepared that they won't resolve their grief in the first session. Moving through grief is a difficult process
