Obsessive-compulsive disorder therapy (OCDT) FAQs

What is OCD counseling?

OCD counseling is a specialized therapeutic approach aimed at supporting individuals coping with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The goal of this counseling is to help clients manage and alleviate the distressing symptoms of OCD by systematically addressing their obsessive thought patterns and compulsive behaviors.

How does OCD counseling work?

In OCD counseling, Thriveworks Maumelle therapists use cognitive behavioral techniques, including exposure and response prevention, to assist you in addressing and managing your obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. An OCD therapist will collaborate with you to identify and modify irrational thought patterns while gradually and gently exposing you to anxiety-triggering situations, helping to disrupt the cycle of obsessive-compulsive rituals and promote healthier coping strategies.

Is OCD counseling conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks OCD counseling in Maumelle, AR is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does OCD counseling last?

The number of sessions for OCD counseling is variable, contingent upon the individual’s unique needs, the severity of their condition, and their progress during treatment. Typically, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), commonly used for OCD, comprises around 12 to 16 weekly sessions, but the exact session count can be customized based on the individual’s response to treatment and therapeutic objectives. Some opt for a more extended duration to comprehensively manage symptoms and address complex issues.

I haven’t had any issues whatsoever. My therapist Ellen Moncrief has been amazing and I always look forward to being able to work with her during our sessions. She listens and does everything she can to help me learn new and better ways of coping and always helps me get better at using the coping skills I already have. I’m grateful for everything she and therapy have been able to do for me and continue to do for me.

Ellen is a very professional and kind therapist. She’s committed and present. She is honest and accountable. The best part about working with Ellen is that my whole life changed for the better. Before that I was anxious all the time. I struggled with depression, conflict management, blowing up, and just generally didn’t have an understanding of myself so I would lose control a lot. As soon as I started working with Ellen I was ready for a big change. While a lot improved over the first year, with more time I was able to be discharged and I am fully confident that I will know how to manage things that may come up in the future. She was patient and knowledgeable as she would teach and guide me through DBT, IFS, and anything else that may help. I liked that we would practice a lot together and discuss how the skills were being applied. In my experience Ellen is very skilled across the board but the part that made so much clarity and improvement possible is that she would let us pause at any time and she could just witness my life feel hard. She was a supportive presence who would be there multiple dead end weeks in a row, still there, still kind and full of care. Even when I was in a deep rut, avoiding the work, or over it all, she never pushed too hard to keep working. She just let me be where I was and without her excellent care I really do not believe I would be able to look forward to life in the same way I do now.
