“Protect your peace.” “Guard your energy.” “If it costs you your peace, it’s too expensive.” Sound familiar? Depending on your algorithm, you might be bombarded by the message that good mental health means feeling calm, regulated, and comfortable as much as possible. On the surface, that sounds reasonable. Most of us could probably benefit from better boundaries, less unnecessary stress, and paying more attention to what drains us. But when we’re constantly hearing messages about protecting our peace, regulating our nervous systems, and removing what no longer serves us, it can be easy to confuse taking care of ourselves with trying to avoid anything that disrupts how we want to feel. Maybe it’s a relationship that requires more effort than we’d like. Feedback that stings. A new opportunity that brings up self-doubt. A commitment we don’t feel like following through on. Or simply the frustration, disappointment, and inconvenience that are part of everyday life. As a licensed therapist who sees this content all over my own feed, I want to remind you: The goal of taking care of your mental health isn’t to build a life where nothing disrupts your peace. It’s being able to take care of yourself while still making room for the parts of life that aren’t particularly peaceful. What does it mean to “protect your peace”? “Protecting your peace” isn’t a clinical term. It’s a phrase commonly used in wellness culture to describe making choices that support your emotional wellbeing and reduce unnecessary stress. That might look like setting boundaries, saying no when you’re overwhelmed, taking space from a difficult relationship, prioritizing rest, or being more intentional about where you spend your time and energy. Those can all be important parts of taking care of yourself. Where it gets complicated is when anything that disrupts your peace starts to feel like something that should be avoided, removed, or treated as harmful. But it’s not always easy to tell where the line is between self-care and avoidance. Saying no could be honoring a limit you genuinely need, or it could be a way to get out of something that makes you anxious. Leaving a conversation could be an important boundary, or it could mean you never have to hear a perspective you disagree with. It helps to ask yourself: What’s driving this choice, and what is it helping me move toward—or away from? Signs you might be protecting your peace too hard There isn’t an exact formula for knowing when taking care of yourself has crossed into something less helpful. Instead, look at the bigger picture. What does protecting your peace allow you to do, and what does it keep you from doing? Here are a few things to watch out for: 1. You’re treating discomfort as evidence that something is bad for you. Therapy speak on social media can make it tempting to interpret every uncomfortable reaction as a warning sign. We say something “dysregulated” us, drained our energy, or triggered us when sometimes what we mean is that we felt anxious, frustrated, embarrassed, challenged, or upset. Those feelings matter, but so does context. Feeling nervous on your first day at a new job tells you something very different from feeling unsafe at work. Being hurt by honest feedback from a friend isn’t equivalent to being repeatedly criticized or belittled. Emotions can tell us that something deserves our attention without always telling us what to do about it. We can notice discomfort, get curious about it, and decide how we want to respond rather than automatically treating the feeling as a signal to remove yourself from the situation. 2. Feeling better has become your measure of whether something is good for you. Relief can also be convincing. But it only tells us how a choice affected us in that moment, not where that choice might lead over time. Backing out of something you were nervous to try might feel great for the rest of the night—regardless of whether or not it was actually the right decision for you in the long run. On the flip side, looking at the credit card balance you’ve been ignoring might feel terrifying in the moment, even though it ultimately will help you feel more in control of your finances in the future. Healthy choices can come with uncomfortable emotions, too. A needed boundary can bring guilt. A necessary ending can bring grief. Getting something you worked hard for can bring self-doubt right along with the excitement. Feeling better doesn’t automatically mean you made the healthiest choice, just as feeling worse for a while doesn’t mean you made the wrong one. It’s normal to feel dysregulated sometimes Therapy can teach you coping skills to help navigate the tough stuff Get started 3. You’re using boundaries to eliminate normal relationship friction. Boundaries are meant to help us navigate relationships, not remove all of the difficult parts of having them. People we care about will annoy us, disagree with us, make mistakes, or handle situations differently than we would. Some relationship dynamics are genuinely harmful, and creating distance can be necessary. But healthy relationships can also contain disappointment, frustration, and hurt. If every rupture becomes a reason to disengage, there’s little opportunity to talk about what happened, hear each other out, take responsibility, compromise, or repair. Being close to imperfect people means accepting that they will occasionally disrupt your peace. 4. You’ve become less willing to be inconvenienced. Honoring your limits is important, but so is honoring the commitments, responsibilities, and relationships that don’t always fit neatly around what you feel like doing. You might go to a friend’s birthday dinner after a long week because being there matters to you. You may follow through on a commitment when staying home sounds much better. Your partner might need extra support during a stressful month, which means you temporarily take on more at home. This isn’t about chronic self-sacrifice or ignoring your limits. Effort, compromise, and inconvenience are simply part of caring about things outside of ourselves. Sometimes we willingly give up a little comfort because something else matters more. Why you shouldn’t strive for a life with zero discomfort and conflict If we start measuring our mental health by how calm, comfortable, or “regulated” we feel, we can end up with an unrealistic standard for what being mentally healthy actually looks like. We’re supposed to experience a range of emotions, including the ones we’d rather not feel. Life will be stressful at times. Relationships will get complicated. Decisions will be hard. None of that necessarily means we’re doing something wrong. Many of the things that contribute to a meaningful life come with discomfort. Starting over after a major life change can be both exciting and terrifying. Going back to school might mean having less free time. Being there for someone you love can be emotionally draining and still deeply important. Pursuing a career you care about can involve rejection and self-doubt. The same goes for relationships. Being close to other people means there will be misunderstandings, disappointment, and conflict. What matters isn’t whether those things happen, but how we navigate them. Can we communicate, listen, take responsibility, and repair when someone gets hurt? None of this means that more discomfort is better or that you should stay in situations that are harmful. Protecting your peace is important, but doing so shouldn’t require that your life always feel peaceful. Maybe that’s a more useful way to think about protecting your peace: not as creating a life that rarely disturbs you, but as taking care of yourself well enough that you can handle life when it does.
