What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

A go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling is understanding that each person has a voice and is valid in their feelings and thoughts. Couples/marriage counseling is about working with both parties wherein each person needs to make changes for the betterment of the whole unit.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

Tools taught in couples/marriage counseling are conflict resolution, effective communication, the stress model of crisis (to identify how each member affects the unit), accountability and self-awareness, removing excuses and acceptance for hurtful behaviors, teaching empathy to one another to see each person's perspectives, and creating behavioral plans to change unhealthy habits/behaviors.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

Meaningful progress is evaluated when a client expresses that therapeutic work is hard. Nothing worth doing comes easy or is changed in a few sessions. Our brains are lazy…working with a client through changing habits and thought processes takes time, exploration, and practice without judgment.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Complete the homework assigned after every session. Therapeutic work, in my opinion, does not happen exclusively in the sessions, it happens outside of sessions. The therapeutic setting is meant to explore concepts on a deeper level so clients can then make the next step of practicing those skills and concepts in between sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

Making the initial step to set up the session is the most important and empowering/strengths-based thing someone can do, albeit scary! To prepare for that first intake, remember, you're a rock star already.

Starting Couples/marriage therapy

Need more help deciding?

Relationships take a lot of work. Once the “honeymoon phase” fades away, small things start to bother you more and past issues become ever-present. If you’re in a committed relationship, you understand what this feels like. When these issues aren’t taken care of, it can lead to disaster. Trust diminishes, intimacy seemingly disappears, and communication can get to an all-time low. In fact, did you know that…

  1. Almost 50% of all marriages in the United States will end in separation or divorce?
  2. The average first marriage that ends in divorce lasts about 8 years?
  3. The average age for couples going through their first divorce is 30 years old?

The real question is, why are so many couples separating or getting divorced? It doesn’t matter if you and your partner have been dating for less than a year or married for over 10, problems happen that need to be addressed before they get worse. Breaking up or getting a divorce doesn’t have to be the path you and your loved one take. On average, couples wait six years before getting the help they need. By understanding and recognizing when you and your partner need professional help, you’ll be able to strengthen your relationship and overcome your challenges quicker and more successfully.

No storm, not even the one in your life, can last forever. The storm is just passing over.” – Iyanla Vanzant

If you have an issue that you want to address and overcome, our marriage counselors and couples therapists can help you here at Thriveworks Counseling in Glen Burnie. All you have to do is give us a call.

Can Couples Therapy or Marriage Counseling Help Me and My Partner?

Jazz and Chris spent years sweeping the small issues under the rug. One wouldn’t do the dishes and the other would angrily slam the dishwasher closed. Another wouldn’t come home from work at a decent hour every night and the other would let the cold spot between them in bed grow larger and larger. That was until they decided to pursue couples therapy. Now Jazz and Chris can communicate more effectively together and understand the importance of listening.

If you have a problem at hand, no matter how big or small you think it is, you could benefit from speaking to a Thriveworks counselor about your concerns. Here are a few of the most common reasons why couples come to us for counseling:

  • Poor communication
  • Financial strain
  • Low self-esteem
  • Jealousy
  • Infidelity
  • Lack of trust
  • Unaligned values
  • Parenting issues
  • Poor work/life balance
  • Major life changes
  • Mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, or addiction

Every couple’s challenges are unique. No two situations are the same. Sometimes you might not even know what the problem is that you’re facing. Your counselor here at Thriveworks in Glen Burnie can help you get to the root of your problems and assist in your journey to overcome them.

Does Marriage Counseling or Couples Therapy Actually Work?

Here at our office, we only have the best counselors and therapists to help our clients achieve greater overall happiness and success. In fact, our mental health professionals are highly trained, licensed, and experienced in helping couples just like you and your partner. Couples counseling has proven to be an effective option in reviving your relationship and improving both you and your partner’s mental health.

When starting to work with a counselor at Thriveworks, they will first assess both of your problems, concerns, and goals for therapy. Doing so gives them an inside look at where the problems lie in your relationship. Based on the information they gather, they’ll create a custom treatment plan that helps you overcome your issues and move forward. They also dedicate themselves to creating a safe, open, and honest space for you each to talk freely about what’s going on.

Therapy can help you achieve things like:

  • Better communication
  • Successful active listening
  • Understanding the root cause of your issues
  • Increased respect and intimacy
  • Effective problem-solving techniques
  • And more!

Couples therapy and marriage counseling helps so many people, and it can help you too. While we would love to help every partnership stay together and overcome the challenges holding them back from happiness, sometimes it is the best option to split. Your therapist can help you make those tough decisions and ultimately understand that your individual mental wellbeing is crucial for a working relationship.
