Abuse in all its forms is a hideous crime as any victim or emotional abuse therapy expert will tell you. It is something that shatters the lives of those it inflicts. People who suffer emotional cruelty become lost and trapped in a never-ending cycle of misery. There is an alarming increase in cases that end in tragedy too. Dominance over the victim rarely happens overnight. In the majority of cases it develops and escalates over the course of many years. The end result is that the perpetrator gets complete control over their victim. The two most controlling factors of emotional abuse are:

  • Controlling the victim by persistent threats
  • Restricting the victim’s personal or financial freedom

Emotional bullies often have an entire arsenal of tactics to use against their victims. What they use to control them, and when, depends on the circumstances at the time.

Abuse Is Abuse in all its Forms

Some states and various countries around the world are now taking emotional abuse very seriously. Others ignore it, putting any complaints down to “domestic issues” that they think should not involve the law. The latter is wrong. Just because there are no physical scars for psychological abuse, that doesn’t mean it’s not a criminal act. Those who endure this kind of abuse are often living in hell. Most abuse victims will admit to the following three points:

  • They can’t think straight
  • They can’t feel or express emotions
  • They are unable to function like “normal” people

As of last year, 2015, emotional abusers in the UK could face up to five years behind prison bars if found guilty. In the US emotional abuse is also illegal, though it’s not always easy to prove. Other countries don’t even discuss abuse unless it’s visibly physical.
