Starting Child therapy

What is child therapy?

Child therapy, also known as counseling for kids, helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst kids include behavioral issues, trauma, bullying, depression, and anxiety. All ages of children can attend and benefit from child-therapy at Thriveworks Beverly Hills.

How does child therapy work?

Child therapy works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the child’s needs based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve play therapy for younger kids or cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks child therapists in Beverly Hills, MI have the expertise and experience to help kids at their level.

Play therapy vs child therapy

Child therapy is a type of therapy meant for clients within a specific age group, while play therapy is an approach to therapy that helps children with self-expression and stress relief, among others. Play therapy is a technique that is often used in child therapy to help children express what’s running through their minds when they do not have the words to express their thoughts and emotions. It can get children to express what’s wrong, what might be causing unwanted behaviors or what they might need, in a way that is accessible to them so that therapists can then work to treat the issue.

How to tell if my child needs counseling

It’s not always obvious when a child should see a therapist for their behavior, though in the midst of challenges like divorce, loss, bullying, and other mental health conditions, it’s often a good idea to seek it out. Common behaviors that can indicate a need for child therapy include separation anxiety, bedwetting (at inappropriate ages), and agitation/excessive irritability — especially if it reaches a point of physical violence.

What type of therapy is best for children?

Cognitive behavioral therapy at Thriveworks in Beverly Hills, MI is one of the best types of therapy for children. However, it can be administered in child therapy sessions in a variety of ways that are more accessible to young minds, such as play therapy.

Is child therapy conducted in person or online?

Child therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does child therapy last?

The length of child therapy depends on your child’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, child therapy sessions will last for several months.

How much does child therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay a $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

There are few greater pains for parents than the physical or emotional suffering of their children. The worry alone is enough to burden the day past the point of endurance. Your mind thinks of little outside of your child’s pain.

The cause of you child’s duress could be some sudden trauma or a lingering, unresolved issue. As days turn to weeks, months or even years, however, your concern builds to the point where you can no longer ignore them.

If your child is struggling in some way, you might believe things will take care of themselves or that you can handle it on your own. We want to believe that we are equipped to handle any issues that our children face. We want to believe that we’re all they need, but sometimes that isn’t the case, and professional care is the best option.

You want your child to recover, and you want them to begin that process now.”

When it comes to emotional and psychological issues, simply sticking on a proverbial bandage is not enough.

Why Pursue Birmingham Child Therapy?

Your son or daughter may benefit from a relationship with a child counselor for any number of reasons. Perhaps your child is having a hard time at school, at home or with friends, and you think there could be a way for him or her to be more relaxed or focused. Or maybe a school guidance counselor has identified some concerns and suggested that you find a professional therapist or counselor for your child to speak with. These types of situations can be challenging to experience, but what’s most important is that you recognize that help is available, and the issue can be resolved.

As your child matures, the reasons they might benefit from child therapy can vary, as will the appropriate techniques. Our trained child therapists, however, have experience helping children of any age, and will communicate with your child, identify potential causes and work toward a solution.

Reasons to pursue child therapy can include:

  • Autism concerns or diagnosis
  • ADHD/ADD concerns or diagnosis
  • Disruptive behavior or poor performance in school
  • Abuse or neglect
  • Violent or criminal behavior
  • Life change, such as parent’s divorce
  • Addictions to drugs or alcohol
  • Eating disorders
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Emotional or psychological problems
  • Anxiety

The above list is by no means exhaustive, and as such, you might not have seen your child’s particular issue mentioned. Thriveworks Birmingham, MI in Oakland County child therapy can still help. Even if you can perceive that something is the matter but can’t quite identify the issue, our child therapists (near Detroit, MI) are still here for you. If you want your child to life a more fulfilling, happier life, therapy is an excellent first step in the healing process.

It may be difficult to clearly identify the problem for you as a parent, but you know your child would benefit from therapy. This is the first step in helping your child live a more full, happy life. Realizing that you and your child need help coping with a trauma, or establishing new ways of communicating, is an important step in the healing process.

Child Therapy Techniques

The activities that are the easiest, cheapest, and most fun to do – such as singing, playing games, reading, storytelling, and just talking and listening – are also the best for child development.”

―Jerome Singer, Yale University professor

As any parent knows, communicating with a toddler is much different than talking with a teenager. A trained counselor or therapist will use several techniques to find what works best for your child, even potentially helping your son or daughter open up in ways that they might find uncomfortable with his or her parents.

These methods of child therapy may include:

  • Traditional talk therapy
  • Behavior modification techniques
  • Play therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Teaching relaxation methods
  • Cognitive and behavioral therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Narrative therapy
  • Teaching coping methods
  • Psychological testing
  • Identifying and treating underlying medical issues
  • Identifying and treating underlying psychological issues

All parents believe that their sons and daughters are unique, and each is correct. There are no two children that are exactly alike. Even identical twins can have wildly different personalities. The professionals at Thriveworks Birmingham child therapy understand that every child is different, and that the therapy approach needs to be customized for each.

A combination of various methods is often implemented as a way to treat the complex interdependency of your child’s issues. We will find the right amalgamation of techniques to most effectively foster communication and achieve progress.

I had the honor of working with Lindsey at a previous job and she is one of the sweetest individuals I have ever met. Lindsey listens intently to everyone and is open to people from all walks of life. Lindsey is knowledgeable and passionate about advocating for mental health. This makes Lindsey a great leader and counselor. I would refer anyone I know to Lindsey!

*****I have been a patient of Sandra's for nearly 2 years now and I really can't say enough good things about her work with me. She is a true Christian counselor and that was exactly the perspective I needed to guide me down the path God was trying to lead me. She definitely strengthened my faith and made many of life's big problems seem like small speed bumps when looking at the big picture!! I highly recommend Sandra Q. if you are looking for the someone who honestly cares about you and the journey you are on. Remember, there’s ultimately only one way to peace in your life, and that’s to walk daily with the Prince of Peace, Christ Jesus!! *****

The doctor (PhD) I saw for therapy decided, on the second session, to pay more attention to doing things on his phone than to listening to me. He thought he was hiding what he was doing behind his portfolio, but he was not. I could see the reflection of what he was doing, and he was looking down more than up. He was pretending to listen but didn't do a very good job of that, because when I stopped talking, he would incorrectly try to restate what I said or, make a comment on what I said which turned out to not be relevant because it was clear he wasn't listening. He did not seem to want to be there. It was a horrible experience. I called the next day to complain to the lady on the phone, and got a sincere "I'm sorry" and that's it. When I got the bill (very expensive, by the way), I have been attempting to call the office to pay it over the phone but I keep getting told that the people that do the billing are currently busy and that I should call back. It should not be that difficult for someone to take a credit card number and apply it to my bill, especially a bill I shouldn't have to pay due to horrible service. I hope the other therapists at Thriveworks are better than the one I selected, and actually have interest in helping their patients.
