Curtis Thornton is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) with 20 years of experience in the mental health field. Curtis specializes in providing therapy to individuals attempting to overcome challenges related to substance use and/or mental health disorders. The areas he has treated include, but are not limited to, relapse prevention, symptom management, enhancing self-esteem, relationship building, building a strong family structure, and recognizing and coping with thoughts, feelings, and emotions. While the goals vary based on the individual, one constant is shared by all: the client directs the course of care, and they choose the desired outcome. Things that people experience shape their lives, some for the better and others sending them down a path for which they were unprepared and need assistance in overcoming. Whether it be illness, substance use, family issues, relationship challenges, difficulty expressing emotions, or any other challenge, hope is possible.
Curtis completed his Master of Social Work (MSW) at Eastern Michigan University. He is a Certified Advanced Drug and Alcohol Counselor (CAADC) and a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS). Prior to earning his MSW, Curtis provided direct care and education to individuals with substance use disorders and/or diagnosed mental health conditions. In this capacity, he was able to work with individuals in overcoming symptoms that had negatively impacted their lives. This phase of Curtis’s career solidified his belief that all individuals need to be treated with love and care, in a way that focuses on the uniqueness of the person and allows them the opportunity to live the life they envision. Curtis knew from the moment he graduated that his dream was to provide therapeutic services to individuals who felt "lost", "hopeless", or whose lives were not being lived in a way that represented their authentic self.
As a therapist, Curtis works with you to look at the big picture of what is occurring in your life. Taking a look at thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and expectations allows you to see what has worked, what has not worked, and what could work with modification. Curtis is well trained in recognizing ways in which we block change, and he has an expertise in overcoming these blocks. He is able to pull from numerous therapeutic models, as together you create a plan to address your specific needs. Curtis believes that therapy works best when you work as a team in moving you towards your goals. He also believes that all individuals deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. All individuals have an inner strength that allows them to overcome the obstacles that hold them back from reaching their goals. Curtis will assist you in finding or utilizing this inner strength throughout your course of care. If you are looking for a therapist who is empathetic, compassionate and able to see you beyond the challenges that led to therapy, Curtis could be the therapist for you. Whether you select him or not, congratulations on starting this journey of change.

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.
Thriveworks family therapists in Royal Oak, MI usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.
The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.
This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.
In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.
Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.
Thriveworks therapists in Royal Oak, MI offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.
Family therapy functions to help families work through their conflicts, change bad habits and dynamics, and ultimately improve the overall relationships. If you think that your family could use some help working through internal issues, addressing bad habits, or cultivating healthier relationships, family therapy might be for you! You might not feel like you need counseling, but that doesn’t mean that your family won’t find value in it.
Thriveworks Counseling has skilled, trained, and experienced family therapists in the Royal Oak area who are prepared to help you.
