Austin Obika, LPC

Philosophy of Care

I am glad to meet you! I am Austin, I am a licensed professional Counselor (LPC) in the states of Arizona, and South Carolina. I am also an independent licensed addiction counselor (LAC) in the State of South Carolina. I have been licensed for over 15 years and have worked with many people and populations to feel better and live their best life! We face so many complex issues throughout the many stages of our lives. The pressures of being everything to everyone can be overwhelming.

I have provided treatment for individuals of all ages with a variety of conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I have also worked with individuals who had been severely mentally ill or experiencing psychological symptoms associated with medical conditions. I have had successful experience in addressing Stress, Anxiety, Family conflicts, Trauma and abuse, Grief, Depression, Relationship issues, Addictions, Parenting issues, Adjustment issues/Coping with life changes, self-esteem, and Anger management. I have also worked with adolescents to prevent out of home placement or a run with the Department of Juvenile Justice

I believe that a holistic and mindful approach to therapy can help relieve the stress of the issues that bring you to therapy. Our connection will help you to understand yourself better and give you insight to determine what you need to do to make changes and achieve balance for a happier life. My method is primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach but also incorporates aspects of Solution-Focused techniques with many individuals. If you are looking to address stress, reduce symptoms, my practice is one of acceptance. My/our time together is free of judgment. You do not need to be fixed; you just need to rediscover the tools that you already have within you. I pride myself on being real, relatable, and warm. I want our time together to be the time during the week where you can put yourself first. I will give you specific strategies and "homework" that will help you to feel more immediate results.

Carol Whitescarver, LCSW

Philosophy of Care

Carol Whitescarver is a Clinical Social Worker, independently licensed in Massachusetts, Indiana, and Arizona.  She has 21 years of social work and psychotherapy practice with individuals, couples, and groups.  Carol graduated from Marymount College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Psychology, and from Fordham University with a Master’s in Social Work.  She has worked in outpatient treatment programs in the community, and with Veterans and active-duty Army members and their families,  as well as in residential programs for TBI, substance abuse and mental illness within the Veterans Health Administration.  She has experience with adolescents, adults and couples who seek supportive and in-depth therapy for trauma, PTSD, life transitions, anger/behavioral issues, grief, relationship challenges, depression, and anxiety.

Carol believes that each person has the ability and innate knowledge to grow and change, and that therapy must be creative, dynamic, and tailored to the individual.  She uses depth therapy and Sandtray Process with those who are highly visual and those who feel completely “stuck.;”  Whether using creativity or more traditional talk therapy, her philosophy tends toward positive psychology that is strength-based, trauma-informed, flexible, enjoyable, and aligned with a person’s desired lifestyle.  Carol believes that therapists must be genuine, and able to create ‘sacred space’ that is safe and supportive so that clients can relax and sense that they are respected, valued, and understood.  A trusting therapeutic relationship that addresses Mind/Body/Spirit is essential to the process of growth and change, and Carol believes that humor, play, forgiveness, creativity, and gratitude practice hold a strong place in psychotherapy.   Creativity, regardless of how it is expressed, is life-affirming and an extremely important asset when redesigning one’s life.

Perhaps you need a safe place to tell your truth, feel understood and accepted, learn new skills in coping or problem solving, or to brainstorm your ideas/goals.  Carol is an experienced therapist who will join you in your search for authentic self, and an understanding or repair of the past and old stories you hold.  Therapy work with Carol includes compassion, warmth, challenge, curiosity, and flexibility.  She will help you find strengths, courage to use your true voice, and confidence to break free of patterns that no longer serve you well.

Kathleen Smerko, PMHNP

Philosophy of Care

Kathleen Smerko earned her Masters Degree and then a post Masters Nurse Practitioner Certification. Her interest in Mental Health treatment goes back to Nursing school. Kathleen strives to make Mental Health treatment an equal priority in the lives of her clients. Clients who are struggling with issues beyond the reach of therapy alone are her specialty. Combining symptom management and supportive therapy are the means to returning clients to their best selves.

Kathleen uses a bio-psycho-social-sexual-spiritual approach to care. All elements of a person's being are an integral approach to wellness.Nursing has always been holistic in nature and she brings that approach to treatment.

Unmanaged symptoms often get in the way of therapy. Symptoms are the body's way of responding to issues not yet managed. Restoring the chemical balance in the brain can help therapy be more effective.
