What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My go-to approach for treating anxiety is to utilize cognitive behavioral therapy and somatic awareness. CBT for anxiety can help clients verbalize their anxious experiences while working to identify thinking errors, imagine ideal outcomes, and work with the anxiety as opposed to against it. Somatic experiencing for anxiety helps clients bridge the gap in their mind-body connection. Anxiety can push people into a fight or flight response even if there is no real threat; somatic awareness helps clients notice how anxiety feels in their body and then engage in techniques to slow or stop the fight or flight response, allowing the mind to utilize thinking and logic again.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

Some tools I teach in therapy for clients with anxiety include:

  • Nervous system reset coping skills: tools that physically help a person's body disengage from the stress response loop
  • Emotional regulation: learning to identify symptoms of anxiety before it becomes unmanageable
  • Mindfulness exercises: learning to take time between something happening and choosing a response

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in therapy for anxiety when they report an improved ability to manage anxious thoughts, symptoms, and experiences. Anxiety is a function of fear, which is an emotion we all need as humans in order to survive. Learning to manage anxiety is not the same as never feeling anxious, but rather the ability to regulate and cope with anxious moments.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy by setting small, attainable goals, maintaining a support system, and gently challenging themselves.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

The first intake session likely brings up anxiety for even the least anxious client, but if you are coming to therapy specifically for anxiety, I imagine it can feel even more intense. To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, be sure to locate the address or video link prior to the day of your appointment, and give yourself ample time to get set up for the first appointment. Besides that, all you need to do is show up. This would already be a step toward healing from anxiety, all before your first appointment!

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Colorado Springs, CO can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Colorado Springs therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Since day one Marie has been so nice and understanding of all my issues with anger. She has helped me so much to take a step back and analyze issues and approach them in a very calm manner and retrain my brain to deal with anxiety issues that lead to anger. She has helped a ton in putting forth effort to better my marriage and other relationships with family. I couldn’t thank her enough for all her help in the last couple of months and in the future! Love her!! Definitely recommend her!

I have known Cassandra for over 10 years and have seen her work hard for the clients she serves. She is caring and compassionate while also approaching her work with clients and colleagues realistically and honestly. They know she is trustworthy and means what she says, and that it comes from a good place. She genuinely wants the best for others.

Jennifer is one of the best and I'd recommend her to everyone without thinking twice. She's helped me though burnout, anxiety, grief (and so much more), while being one of the most compassionate and knowledgeable therapists I've interacted with.
