Starting Treatment With a Psychologist

What are psychologists?

Psychologists are mental health professionals that provide psychotherapy services and diagnoses for their clients. They have more research-focused training than most therapists, as they are more medically educated and receive a more general education about therapeutic approaches and theory.

How do psychologists work?

Thriveworks psychologists in Cheshire, CT provide standard psychotherapy services, tailoring treatment to each client and their unique concerns. However, they can also provide diagnoses to clients when appropriate, something that therapists and counselors cannot do. Finally, in some states in the U.S., they are allowed to prescribe medication.

Can I see a psychologist in person or online?

How long would I see a psychologist?

Psychological treatment at Thriveworks Cheshire is very individualized and specific to each client, which means that the duration of treatment is often varied depending on a client’s condition or disorder, the state of their symptoms, and their specific goals.

Need more help deciding?

It’s hard to admit when we aren’t okay. Sometimes it feels like it’s easier just to sweep our emotions under the rug rather than openly deal with them. While this might not seem like a big deal at the moment… days, weeks, months of doing this can lead to overwhelming difficult emotions. Asking for help is a great way to cope with your emotions and gain the skills or insight to move forward in a healthier, happier way.

Challenges are what make life interesting; Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” – Joshua J. Marine

If you’re struggling—maybe it’s with stress, anger, anxiety, or depression—consider reaching out for professional mental health help from a psychologist. They have the training, skills, and experience to guide and support you in a way that others can’t. At Thriveworks Counseling in Cheshire, CT, our psychologists are ready to help their clients live happy, successful lives. If there is a challenge or obstacle standing in your way, give our office a call. We’d love to work with you and provide you with the support you’re looking for.

What Is a Psychologist?

As we briefly mentioned above, psychologists are trained mental health professionals who have the skills and tools to help their clients work through the many challenges that life brings. They are uniquely qualified to help you in a variety of ways and will use a custom treatment plan to do so. If you decide to work with one of the psychologists at our office, they will first get to know you, including the challenges in your life. Then, they’ll take this knowledge and apply a variety of different therapeutic techniques and methods to help you accomplish your goals and overcome your challenges.

Psychologists do not administer medication to their clients. However, they will work closely with your primary care provider or psychiatrist if they feel like medication would be the right fit for you and your needs. If you feel like medication might be the right option for you, talk to your psychologist and they will walk you through your options.

What Areas Can Psychologists Help Me With?

One of the great things about working with a psychologist is knowing that they have a broad range of knowledge about mental health conditions and challenges. There are many different reasons why we see clients seek help from our psychologists, including:

  • Grief and loss
  • Job stress or insecurity
  • Trauma or PTSD
  • Parenting issues
  • Relationship problems
  • Stress management
  • Family turmoil
  • Poor communication
  • Anger management
  • Mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression
  • Low self-esteem
  • Major life changes such as moving to a new city

Don’t worry—if the specific challenge you’re facing wasn’t listed above, do not feel discouraged. The psychologists at our office are qualified to help you through many different challenges, more than we could possibly list. If you’re unsure why you’re feeling what you’re feeling, they can help you identify root causes and give you a proper diagnosis as needed.

When you decide to seek out therapy, you are choosing to take steps towards living a happier life. Working with a psychologist at Thriveworks who cares about you and your wellbeing will give you the confidence to move forward and live the life you want. You can expect to make great strides in a variety of ways, including:

  1. Improving your communication skills
  2. Learning effective problem-solving techniques
  3. Understanding how to control anger and stress
  4. Learning how to identify what your stressors are
  5. Gaining confidence in yourself and your ability to tackle future conflicts

You should be proud of yourself for asking for help. We know it’s not always easy.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
