What Are Common Reasons Couples Seek Out Relationship Counseling?

Relationships require effort, plenty of patience, and lots of nurturing. Even with all the right components, problems may still arise. Couples counseling can help you smooth over the rocky parts of your relationship and highlight the components that make it stronger.

Some common reasons couples seek couples therapy include:

  • A breakdown in communication
  • Jealousy or trust issues
  • Major life changes
  • Child behavioral issues
  • Mental health problems
  • Divorce or separation
  • Intimacy issues or sexual dissatisfaction
  • Conflict resolution
  • Financial, religious, or political disagreements

Benefits and Takeaways of Couples Counseling

Marriage and couples therapy is not only for couples in crisis. It also helps couples overcome short-term issues, resolve conflict, and improve their relationships significantly over time.

Therapy sessions will lead you to understand each other on a deep, meaningful level and show you how to effectively communicate your thoughts, emotions, and desires. This understanding can build (or rebuild) a solid partnership based on mutual respect and help you peacefully resolve any future issues that arise.

Some of the ways couples therapy can improve your relationship include:

  • Restoring trust and respect for one another
  • Building strong communication and active listening skills
  • Identifying underlying issues and resolving them
  • Learning how to solve problems and navigate conflict
  • Facilitating a safe space for open expression
  • Improving mental health and stability
  • Restoring your “spark” or heightening intimacy

Couples counseling can also indirectly improve other relationships in your life. The communication skills you learn during therapy sessions can help you convey ideas and connect more effectively with coworkers and improve your performance at work. Many clients find that therapy also helps them work out the kinks in their family relationships and restore damaged friendships.
