Starting Couples therapy

What is Couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Need more help deciding?

For some reason there is this horrible misconception in society today that going to couples counseling means that the end of one’s marriage looms large. But realistically, we all know this is no truer about a marriage than it is to say that just because a person visits an accountant they are on the verge of bankruptcy.

We all know that this simply isn’t true in life. While, indeed, many couples do seek couples counseling to help them overcome problems, many also seek counseling so that they can move their good marriage or romantic partnership into a great one. So they can be better equipped to address latent problems that may be festering, or even perhaps to maintain an already healthy relationship. Frankly, both reasons should be applauded.

If you are in the Detroit area and you think you and your partner could benefit from couples therapy, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Birmingham, MI.

Thriveworks Birmingham Couples Counseling Will Help You Confront the Problem

At Thriveworks Birmingham in Oakland County, MI, our couples counselors and psychologists can help you and your spouse cut straight to the source of whatever the problem may be, not just treat the symptoms. Whether that problem or hindrance in your marriage is seemingly talking past each other, maybe looking for things to fight about, a breached trust, competing careers, or perhaps insecurity about the past or future — a Thriveworks couples counselor near Detroit can help.

The fact of the matter is you’re not alone in struggling with addressing these problems in your marriage. Indeed, these are among the most common reasons for strife and divorce in modern marriages. But as much as these are truly common problems, for no couple is immune from difficulty — they are all solvable problems.

Perhaps you and your partner are plagued by some other problem. It may be something as simple as needing help developing a parenting strategy, or it may be something unspeakable. The point is, that no matter the problem you may have or the depth of despair you feel, you can overcome it; and a Thriveworks Birmingham counselor can help you do it.

It’s not that your problem isn’t serious; it’s that with the help of a couples counselor, whatever you are struggling with can be overcome. Simply put, you’re not alone in whatever you are struggling with, so you shouldn’t have identify and overcome them by yourself either.

If we honestly assess our relationships, there isn’t one among us who wouldn’t realize that there is room for improvement, growth, and development. Now, of course it’s a lot easier to stay right where we are in our comfortable patterns of bad habits and act like our relationships aren’t being stifled or hindered — to just sweep the problem under the rug. You and your spouse might even have some unspoken agreement to not mention whatever the problem is. But if we are honest with ourselves, we all know that that isn’t right, and that we aren’t happy with the status quo.

The truth is it takes courage to admit that relationships aren’t easy. And even more to actually act on that admission. But oh, how sweet the reward of simple, open communication. The path to growth is never easy — and it may be full of apparently daunting obstacles. But just like everything else in life, our relationship problems can be easily overcome if we rely on a trustworthy guide.

We Can Guide You to a Fulfilling Relationship

This is exactly what we offer here at Thriveworks. All of our Thriveworks Birmingham couples counselors or licensed professionals ready to guide you around and through the obstacles that might stand in your way to a more fulfilling relationship. They can help you grow; help you better understand your partner; help you thrive together in a professional, non-confrontational environment with expert counsel.

Marital problems can all be overcome with good communication, and a capable guide. Our couples counselors are ready to help and guide you through whatever marital problem you might be sweeping under the rug. We know those obstacles might seem daunting, but our counselors are ready to help you through them.

Helping a relationship flourish may look different for everyone, but a Thriveworks counselor in the Detroit area can help you overcome it — whether it looks like one of the following or something completely different:

  • Learn to identify and understand the source of your relationship problems
  • To teach you how to listen, communicate, and respect each other’s feelings
  • To help you honestly express yourself in an environment of trust
  • Developing new methods of communication between you and your spouse
  • Addressing deep-seeded psychological issues or addictions that may be damaging your relationship

You can overcome it and grow from it.

We Are Eager to Help

Now, that might sound overwhelming, to be sure. But here at Thriveworks Birmingham couples counseling, we understand that you might feel intimidated or discouraged by your significant other. It may seem as if all hope is lost, or that change is impossible. Or perhaps you’ve tried just talking with your spouse or partner about your concerns and feelings, and nothing has changed. You might even feel most alone in your relationship. That can all end now. We have counselors standing by to help you that will meet with you within 24 hours. Our philosophy is if you’re ready to make your relationship better, we’re ready to help you.

At Thriveworks, we understand the trials and despair that can come with a relationship. And that’s what makes us different. We won’t simply ask, “How do you feel about that?” Our counselors are active — passive listeners — will help you develop a strategy and participate in your victories! Every marriage and romantic partnership is unique and consequently every marital problem is equally unique, and we will help you craft a healthy, individual solution to help you find the joy and contentment you are looking for. At Thriveworks, we focus on what works for you — what helps you overcome what is difficult for you so you can have a fulfilling future.

Growth is Easier Than You Think

Going to a couples counselor or psychologist doesn’t mean the end of your marriage is impending. Rather, it can signify a new beginning, the strength to overcome — to thrive.

Help is just a phone call or email away — we have appointments available immediately. Your struggle can end today. Let us help you create the healthy, respectful, loving, and flourishing relationship that you both need and want. Let us help you create the happiness you and your spouse long for — the happiness you deserve.

The way we see it, if you are ready to move forward, we are ready to be your guide. Now is the time.

We now accept all major insurance plans. If you are in the Detroit area and you’re searching for couples therapy, consider reaching out. Call us today to schedule an appointment at 248-686-3347.

I had the honor of working with Lindsey at a previous job and she is one of the sweetest individuals I have ever met. Lindsey listens intently to everyone and is open to people from all walks of life. Lindsey is knowledgeable and passionate about advocating for mental health. This makes Lindsey a great leader and counselor. I would refer anyone I know to Lindsey!

I’ve known Tammy Wagstaff for quite some time. She was very helpful to me for finding my strengths and improving my working and personal relationships. She is a good listener and is able to “see” my point of view . I would highly recommend this counselor

*****I have been a patient of Sandra's for nearly 2 years now and I really can't say enough good things about her work with me. She is a true Christian counselor and that was exactly the perspective I needed to guide me down the path God was trying to lead me. She definitely strengthened my faith and made many of life's big problems seem like small speed bumps when looking at the big picture!! I highly recommend Sandra Q. if you are looking for the someone who honestly cares about you and the journey you are on. Remember, there’s ultimately only one way to peace in your life, and that’s to walk daily with the Prince of Peace, Christ Jesus!! *****

The doctor (PhD) I saw for therapy decided, on the second session, to pay more attention to doing things on his phone than to listening to me. He thought he was hiding what he was doing behind his portfolio, but he was not. I could see the reflection of what he was doing, and he was looking down more than up. He was pretending to listen but didn't do a very good job of that, because when I stopped talking, he would incorrectly try to restate what I said or, make a comment on what I said which turned out to not be relevant because it was clear he wasn't listening. He did not seem to want to be there. It was a horrible experience. I called the next day to complain to the lady on the phone, and got a sincere "I'm sorry" and that's it. When I got the bill (very expensive, by the way), I have been attempting to call the office to pay it over the phone but I keep getting told that the people that do the billing are currently busy and that I should call back. It should not be that difficult for someone to take a credit card number and apply it to my bill, especially a bill I shouldn't have to pay due to horrible service. I hope the other therapists at Thriveworks are better than the one I selected, and actually have interest in helping their patients.
