In addition, it can help people manage the challenges that stem from their addiction, from relationship issues to problems at work, as well as those whose addiction may stem from issues like trauma.

How does addiction counseling work?

Addiction counseling at Thriveworks in Arlington, VA works by helping one understand the underlying causes of their addiction, teaching them coping strategies, and recognizing their specific triggers. Long-term or ongoing addiction counseling can also help to prevent relapse.

Is addiction counseling conducted in person or online?

Addiction counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does addiction counseling last?

The length of addiction counseling depends on the individual’s needs, the extent and severity of their addiction, and the problems that might stem from it. That said, people can make meaningful progress in addiction counseling in the first weeks to months.

Need more help deciding?

It’s hard to ask for help. Sometimes it’s the hardest thing in the world to do. All sorts of feelings can arise, which may cause the individual to suffer in silence. This is a major problem for those who have developed an addiction. Understanding they have a problem is a challenge in and of itself—then, asking for help and taking the necessary steps to recover poses a new set of challenges.

Do I Need Addiction Help? Warning Signs of Addiction

As we mentioned above, one challenge is recognizing that one has an addiction problem. Conquering this challenge is incredibly important, as it is the first step in getting the help that you need to recover. While the symptoms or warning signs of addiction can vary, depending on the person and the substance or behavior they are addicted to, there are a few common behavioral signs of addiction including:

  • Obsessive thoughts and behaviors that involve the desired substance or thing. Ask yourself, “Does the desired substance or thing take priority over my responsibilities?”
  • Loss of control: Ask yourself, “Have I failed to stop using or cut back on my use of the desired substance/thing?”
  • Denial: Ask yourself, “Are my loved ones concerned about me? Do I just brush them off when they bring these concerns to me?”

Additionally, there are some physical symptoms of addiction that are common among these individuals, including:

  • Aggression or irritability
  • Frustration
  • Body odor
  • Incoherent speech
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Insomnia or other sleep disruptions

It is also common for those with an addiction to experience trembling, nausea, a loss of appetite, depressive thoughts and feelings (especially when they go for an extended period of time without using the desired substance/thing).

Getting past some of these symptoms is tough and it’s a reason why many addicts go through their lives miserable and untreated. Oftentimes an addict only seeks treatment after an intervention by those who love them. They never knew that they were an addict—or more likely they knew but just didn’t want to admit it. Admitting it and seeking early treatment are vital to recovery. If these symptoms and warning signs of addiction are present in your life, consider working with an addiction counselor at Thriveworks Arlington. We are here to help you manage your addiction before it gets worse.
