Noel:
My go-to approach for helping people in grief & loss counseling is helping the client to understand that there is no timeline to grief. I find the best benefit in allowing yourself space to grieve and giving yourself grace when it's hard because you can't force yourself through the process, it just needs to happen in it's own time.
Laurie:
I mostly use the Kubler-Ross Stages of Loss. I find that it is a tangible approach fir grieving people to understand and practice applying.
Noel:
I teach the following tools in grief & loss counseling: focusing on the good memories, and if angry, write a letter to the person and get your feelings out on paper. Keeping a journal of emotions can be helpful when they get overwhelming. Allow space and time to express your feelings so they don't come out and inopportune times.
Laurie:
I provide education on the stages of loss, as well as how the stages are helped by the tools. I teach how to use CBT at each stage. I also teach behavioral approaches depending on their readiness and the stage they are at.
Noel:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling when, as time passes, their emotions become less and less intense. They are able to smile when remembering the person and more good memories of happy times begin to surface. This shows the focus becoming less on the loss and more on the love they had for that person.
Laurie:
Progress becomes evident to me when they can show me they are coping, when they present with less pervasive sadness(i.e., in their speech and body language), or when they can specify to me what has worked and what hasn't in the process of grieving.
Noel:
Clients can supplement their time in grief & loss counseling with becoming involved in a grief support group. Also reading books on grief can help a person process their loss further.
Laurie:
Clients can be around supportive family and friends, take care of their spiritual self (for example, attend church), or journal. This is a great way to let go of thoughts and feelings. This process takes the thoughts and emotions from inside you and puts them outside of yourself in a journal, where it's private and safe.
Noel:
To prepare for their first grief & loss counseling session, an individual can make sure they have a good support network to gather around them through the process.
Laurie:
To prepare for grief therapy, you can make the decision to share the grief and be willing to allow yourself to be human in a time of grief.
